Very engaging but ended very abruptly. It felt like it was all building and then, suddenly, it ended. There were a number of unanswered questions, which left me feeling really unsatisfied. Mainly, we didn’t hear anything about Reid or Dawson in the epilogue? Hello? I also loved the idea of three devils, and desperately wish we could have had more background and lore on them.

a four star banger of a debut! I liked to start off by saying I haven't read YA since 2016, but boy am I glad I stumbled upon this author on booktok and put a hold on Libby.
Thoroughly enjoyed this story and it's characters - the way Xan wrote each POV was seamless with everything connected to one another. I also enjoyed the incorporation of the crime podcast element. An extension on the "the devils" characters would have been really good but I'll take what I can get.
Anyway, get this debut novel from your local library or Libby, i'd say it's a perfect book for a Summerween TBR
Pro tip! Listening to a Southern Gothic playlist makes the reading experience 10X better!

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this audiobook! All opinions are my own!
This was such a creepy read that highlighted the dichotomy of the South in such an uncomfortable way, and I loved every second of it. From the injustices wrapped up in tragic teenage lives, to the lengths that the rich will go to to protect their own, every part of this book made you stop and take a breath.
This was a book that made me feel as though I was driving through my Southern hometown, from the mansions to the homeless camps and back. Setting this against the pure horror of the cicadas and their devils made this book come to life in a way that will stick with me for ages.
I also loved the addition of the podcast script, it really helped bring the audio to life!
Get your hands on this, and maybe keep the lights on while you read!
