3.5⭐️ rounded up. As a Michigander I’m biased but it was so enjoyable and educational to read an alternate history of the region from an indigenous perspective. The mystery and resolution could have been a little stronger—tighter, less exposition. But I connected with the characters, the prose, and both the real and imagined aspects of the setting. And despite the somewhat predictable ending, the book is unlike anything I’ve read before.

This book starts off extremely slow. Only got to 26% before a bookclub meeting, where I wanted to know the ending and had no problem with spoilers. Only once I knew the ending, was I interested in finishing the book. Interesting concept with an alternative history regarding colonization in North America, but that definitely was not the main focus as I thought it would be.
