I wanted Isabel to fly free, I loved the first part of the book where she's discovering her freedom and having her ideas and plans. I was a so gutted when we jumped forwards in time and we got to see how she faired.
I enjoyed the style it felt surprisingly fresh for a book published in 1881.
If you're not a fan of an ambiguous ending beware for myself I enjoy deciding for myself.

A book about repression in the guise of liberation. An irritating, needlessly intrusive narrator, though perhaps I’d just forgotten how irritating the narrators of Victorian realist novels are.
A really strange section in the middle of the narrative that seems to dodge the difficult questions of the book by skipping over the slow disintegration of a marriage. Still, quite enjoyed the ending, which packs more emotional punch than the previous 600 pages combined.

For such a long book with no plot, I was surprised to find myself so engaged but the characters and the wit of this novel made this an enjoyable read. It touches on lots of topics without going into much depth from feminism to classism to domestic abuse but this has made it still relevant today.
