The Art of Loving

Erich Fromm

3.7 AVERAGE

challenging informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

This is a tricky one to review. You definitely need to power through some retrograde attitudes about sex, gender, and sexuality in the first section, but Fromm’s insight (from decades ago) about society, religion, loneliness, and capitalism are still on point today.

Don’t give up when you encounter some a few truly terrible claims early in the book. It’s worth continuing.

A good discourse on the subject

there were a couple good lines, and i like how jewish he clearly is, plus the anticapitalism, but ultimately too.... idk, religious? old timey? (it's very heteronormative, for one)... and unsourced. some people (erich) just be saying shit!

I wasn't captivated by the book. I winced at some things and found the wording choices and writing style to be boring and off-putting, but I feel like there was still some good nuggets worth keeping in mind.
I would say my rating is more of a 2.5 rather than a full 3.

Only read this because of Mr. Kim Namjoon

There were parts that I enjoyed but overall this was a great book to read before bed.... So boring and outdated.

4.5*
A powerful take on love in our society - and a surprising criticism on capitalism through it.
Should be mandatory reading, in my humble opinion.
