Recently in therapy, I've been seeking to address issues that thwart me in my relationships and I thought it was about time to read Eric Fromm's classic, The Art of Loving. Fromm's commentary on patriarchy, matriarchy, capitalism, and religious traditions caught me by surprise for their relevance to current discussions. I'm not sure how helpful it will be in my work around relationships, but in my thinking about these larger issues, I've found it to bring together things I've been thinking about in various contexts, especially around decolonization.

Very informative and thought-provoking book. Loved every part of it except for the homophobia.

“I am loved for what I am, or perhaps more accurately, I am loved because I am. This experience of being loved by mother is a passive one. There is nothing I have to do in order to be loved—mother's love is unconditional.
All I have to do is to be—to be her child. Mother's love is bliss, is peace, it need not be acquired, it need not be deserved.”
“If I truly love one person I love all persons, I love the world, I love life. If I can say to somebody else, "I love you," I must be able to say, "I love in you everybody, I love through you the world, I love in you also myself.”
“Love is an act of faith, and whoever is of little faith is also of little love”
-
I am not a fan of this book. It is all over the place and yet repeats the same thing over and over. Maybe I just don't like books about psychology or philosophy or whatever this is. However, the part about motherly love was really beautiful.
