I think this book gets at what is already out there and is known about healing from trauma in a way that is straightforward and relatable but not groundbreaking. It’s to the point. Helpful for people who are new to different modes of therapy and potentially healing for those. But this does not tread new waters by any means.
Are you mad at me? Who has never asked that question? As I have gotten older, I have learned to care less about whether people like me or not. I mean sure, if EVERYONE hated me I would be concerned, but I try not to care about one offs because most often, I don’t really like that person either. So why care if they like me? This book looks deeply into how your childhood has shaped you into adulthood, and how you use “fawning” to feel safe.
You will find yourself agreeing with some of the stories and realizing that yes, how you respond in as an adult, is directly linked to how you responded as a child, just in different scenarios. I really enjoyed this deep dive into trauma, and the effects it has on us, even when we think we have gotten past it. I listened to this one of audio and it helped to really take in what Meg was covering.

One of the best self-help books I’ve ever read. I love how holistic the author’s approach is to mental health and healing childhood trauma, integrating mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual practices.
Feeling really inspired this! I will definitely be incorporating the techniques she mentioned into my day-to-day life. 5/5 ☆

How do I review a book that felt like months, maybe years, of therapy? How do I adequately convey that it felt like Meg Josephson was talking directly TO me and validating MY experiences? Which I realize is a lesson in how common living within the fawn response is.
Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for an eARC of this book! This is my honest review.

I've been in complex trauma therapy for 4.5 years so, whilst none of this was new, it was deeply resonant and a much-needed, clear and articulate reminder. I will definitely be buying a physical copy as I can see myself revisiting this time and again when I need it, especially when it comes to navigating conflict, communication, self-judgement and emotional intimacy. Can't recommend enough.
So good, and funny and relatable and beautiful and healing. Absolutely incredible debut.
