This book summary needs a trigger warning! Graphic child molestation scene in the second chapter. WTF.

I read The Paris Novel after a string of mysteries and books with plot twists, so I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. It never did. Ultimately,  I found The Paris Novel to cover a woman’s reflective journey throughout Paris.

The main reason I didn’t finish the book was the large role that the main character’s suffering from repeated childhood sexual assault played in her actions. It’s described in a decent amount of detail right at the beginning, and I was hoping to get past it but like others have said it is a driving part of her character. Which to me leads to a weird juxtaposition, between this horrific thing that happened and the lighter, touristy travel novel that the book is advertised and otherwise reads as. The touristy stuff seemed superficial, the coincidences that drove the plot became eye-rolly, and the mom didn’t need to be as cruel for the plot to still work. It just didn’t work for me.

The food writing was great but I just really didn’t care anything about the characters. It was like pulling teeth getting through it for me. At 42%, I decided to call it quits. I still love Ruth Reichl’s nonfiction and would read her again….just not this one.

Although I ended up loving the book, I would have greatly appreciated a trigger warning. It would be highly inappropriate of the author to have included such a detailed traumatic event without having experienced it herself, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. I enjoyed the arc of the plot, even though it is predictable. The way Reichl describes food is fun!
