John Lewis’s goodbye and final reminder to people to act if they see injustice. Make your voice heard if you see injustice and help people up instead of being xenophobic, racist, misogynist, homophobic… John Lewis dedicated his life to public service and social justice and he asks that others step forward. Educate young people and encourage them to become leaders. He always had faith in god and his fellow human beings. I can not say enough about the man and his final words.
Quote; “On humility whatever good work you do, whatever powerful profound work, do it because it’s right or becomes it’s necessary, do it because you know you must.”
“The opposite of fear is freedom.”

End of life advice and wisdom is always fascinating to hear/read/listen to. The distillation of what is most important to the person, what they wish to pass along to those who will listen and who will take and move forward with. I think he was able to do that in this book.

With John Lewis, it was a life of fighting for what is right, what is good, and what is necessary. I'm sure so much of what was in the book was a constant refrain from him throughout his life, and it is so vital to have people of conviction like him holding the flame for the rest of us until we're ready to take it ourselves. His faith and conviction helped an innumerable amount of us, whether we knew it or not.

Get into good trouble y'all.

I can see myself coming back to this. Meditations on so many aspects of life. An optimistic look for the future. An enduring legacy.

Quick and lovely reflections on multiple topics from the legendary John Lewis. Particularly loved his chapters on good days, on courage, and on marriage.

In the foreword, Andrew Young wrote, "I hope you find your generation's John Lewis. This is a time when we need one because there's a lot to do." I could not agree more. I have always deeply admired John Lewis, and having read these words, that feeling has only increased.

This book is a series of short essays on a variety of topics from good trouble to justice to humility. John Lewis worked on it while undergoing treatment for cancer until he died in July 2020. I found it most helpful to read just a few chapters at a time, rather than trying to sit and read it in a sitting. I liked having more time to process and reflect.

I am not quoting any of John Lewis's words because I couldn't possibly narrow down to a few quotes that would fit in the space of a review. I found them profound and plan to re-read the book multiple times and share it with others. And I hope you will pick up a copy, so you can do likewise.

Thank you to Grand Central for this amazing book. These opinions are my own.

***Audiobook review***
On days when you are feeling down and unmotivated, listen to this book. Moving words and thoughts get you up and out of your seat. An amazing legacy left by a man who defined calm under pressure and made change. We were lucky to have him.

This was a really powerful read and made me miss John Lewis' energy and light in the world. I loved the short chapters with varying messages as it was an easy and inspirational read. I will definitely be coming back to it again and think it would be good as an every morning reminder. He wrote it as he was dying of cancer so it is a reflection of the life he lived while also a hopeful account of the future.
