Wow....can't really say I liked it. I found it disturbing and though provoking. As one reads the news and hears of cults and extreme communities Ms . Melamed's farfetched world suddenly does not seem beyond the possible.

I almost feel strange giving this book 4 stars because to say I enjoyed it sounds awful given the subject matter. It's one of the most disturbing things I've ever read but so well written. Nothing is ever explicitly stated but at the sane time it's very clear to see exactly what's happening to these girls.

While I am growing tired of the women are breeders in a post apocalyptic world, I still enjoyed this. However there were a lot of seriously disturbing and dark things in this book that made me think wait...did I read that right? Incest? Yup. One messed up cult.

I give this a generous 3 stars because I thought it was a good story even if it was a bit tedious. I felt it relied a little too much on the sensational.

Wow. What a horrifying and yet gripping novel this is. It was beautifully written and kept me interested the whole time. Yes, it reminded me of The Handmaid's Tale, The Giver, and Never Let Me Go, but also of the Village. A group of people break away from society and make a new community with their own rules. The story is written about the daughters who are coming of age and becoming adults/wives/mothers at the ages of 9-13. A scary depiction of a futuristic place of incest and isolation.

Interesting concept for a storyline but I couldn't get past one of the major aspects of said storyline. Won't be reading again or recommending.

This book was simultaneously awful and amazing. Melamed's writing is nuanced - it's descriptive, it evokes such imagery from a few sparse words, and she captures the eerie atmosphere completely. At the same time, the subject matter is awful - and how the girls deal with it, as if it's normal, is abhorrent. Overall, it was a fascinating read.
