Not going to give this one a rating as I DNF but I just couldn’t get into it, a bit too slow and boring for my dark romance corrupted mind.
Another addicting story from this author. It's a long one, but so good. I'm trying hard to give a review without spoilers. Fate plays a heavy hand, which i loved. There's sacrifice, and love and loyalty. Not just between Harbor and Lark, but within their families. I understood the why of Harbors plan, even if I couldn't agree on all of it. I can see how it made sense, and was needed in a way. The last few chapters were so satisfying, just seeing how the pieces of the puzzle were coming into place. I loved this romance. It felt like something more even from the very beginning.
So…. I was super into this story, loving the characters, loving the love, but then the ending just got way too wrapped up in easy forgiveness. I’m sorry….not a good enough reason for him to completely abandon her with no explanation…for YEARS. Too many other ways that could have gone. No groveling either?? That’s supposed to be the best part! And then she just forgives the mother that abandoned her after sharing one meal? I’m sorry, no. How did Lark go from a vivacious spitfire to a doormat being steamrolled?? I’d deduct more stars than I did for all of this, but I do still love the first 80% of this story.
I’ll maybe give the next book in the series a try because I’m intrigued by this family, but if it’s like this, that’s all for me.

I just couldn't get into the reason for the separation. It was so ridiculous to me. The H and h meet in college, pretty much insta love. I liked both characters. But he leaves her for 5 years after college while she is in medical school. The reason is that the h won't let the H pay for medical school (H is wealthy). So secretly there is a scholarship set up for her by the H. He comes back to her when medical school is done. So if the h knew the H was paying for her degree, she wouldn't have been with him? The author was trying to create baseless drama.
Harbor sees Lark at a gas station and starts talking to her. He recognizes her from a class they both have at college but she doesn't know who he is. They talk but she doesn't give him her name. He tries, but she doesn't give it to him. Later, Lark is at work for a catering company and finds that she's at Harbor's house. Harbor keeps pursuing her, drawn to her for some unknown reason.
This is a second chance romance but that doesn't happen until way later in the book. The majority of the book is the beginning of their relationship and learning about their pasts and traumas. When they finally do separate in life, it's like a fast forward that isn't like others I've encountered. It jumps to two years later, then a year later, and year after that, and so on. But when it jumps to each place in time, it's a pretty quick glimpse into mostly him trying to get back with her but her declining. I don't know, it just wasn't as gripping as other second chance romances I've read. I'm not saying I didn't like this story, it just wasn't my favorite. I've read others by this author and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I think this one was just written in a way that didn't sink its teeth into me like others.
I read their series out of order…. I love this book so much! I didn’t realize it was going to be a second chance for romance, so when things shifted in Harbor and Larks relationship… I was sobbing profusely. I enjoyed reading it and will be doing so again!

The characters, the plot, the writing…all completely one dimensional. Some of the scenes gave me whiplash, because they were so inconsistent and emotionally stunted.
