~ Fun Origin Story! ~

I try to spice up my reading with comics, and with the Ms. Marvel show coming out, I decided it was the perfect time to read some of the comics!!

The story was great, the art is really vibrant and engaging, and I love Kamala as a character so a fun read!!

Definitely recommend this one if you need a fun comic to read that doesn’t really need prior marvel knowledge!

Kamala Khan is your average Muslim girl living in Jersey City. She doesn’t quite fit in because she doesn’t have blonde hair, has way overprotective parents, and eats weird food. You know just your average Muslim teenager trying to stay true to her heritage while trying to fit in. In a fit of rebellion against her parents she sneaks out to go to a party and this weird fog over takes everything and suddenly Kamala has superpowers. But how is she supposed to control them, and what exactly can she do, and why? What should she do with her new powers?

I love that they made not just a Muslim into a superhero, but a Muslim girl. What more says girl power than that? I like this storyline a lot better than most graphic novels, I tend to read them for the information about the characters and feel disappointed without a great storyline. This story has depth, and is something that a lot of immigrants can probably relate to (I’m just you’re average American girl so I can’t say that first hand). Learning how to bring your family’s culture to a new world where everyone thinks you’re weird because you’re different, but that difference is an integral part of you throw superpowers on top of that, and the fact that you’re just a teenager trying to save your small part of the world. The one thing I wasn’t a big fan of with this graphic novel is the drawing, it’s just a style I don’t like and found it to be kind of distracting.

Read because if s podcast talking about it. A good origin story. Kamala is a good teen-turned-superhero like Spider-Man.

I couldn't put this down. As a geeky teen with suddenly acquired new superpowers, Kamala Khan is way more entertaining than I remember Peter Parker being. Unfortunately, the story didn't grab me as much towards the end as at the beginning, which is the only thing that kept this book from being five stars.

Can't wait to read volume 2.

So I heard a lot about this graphic novel/comic, and decided to finally check it out.

While it didn't have the problem that I have with a lot of comics/graphic novels, it still felt like it was rushing through everything. At times the story didn't progress much, but sometimes things would happen and I would be like: Wait? What? How? I just had to run along with the story trying to keep up.

Luckily, like I said, unlike other comics/graphic novels we don't really get thrown head first in a story or a world. We meet Kamala and only after we meet her, her family and their strictness does weirdness start to kick in. Only then do we see Kamala change into a superhero, though a very clumsy and awkward one. There should really be a guide if one suddenly and magically transforms into a superhero.

And that is also what makes the story pretty great, we see Kamala struggle, we see her struggle with her powers, figuring out how they work, what they can and can't do and we see her try to help out people. Of course at first she is at risk, people might find out, her powers are just too unstable and too new for her to keep them, so she needs a disguise. It was great fun seeing her try out stuff, draw up designs and finally deciding on one outfit.

Kamala is a really great and diverse character. Her family situation is very interesting, I really enjoyed reading about Kamala's life and seeing what she did. I could clearly see that she loved her parents and her brother, but she also wants to be able to enjoy life, and go out and party. Which is logical, she is a girl with dreams and friends. And now she is also a superhero.

The art was gorgeous, though at times the faces looked like they went through a blender, which is a shame. But all in all, the art was truly one of my favourite things of this comic/graphic novel. I love the colours that were used.

All in all, I would recommend this graphic novel/comic to everyone. Are you looking for a realistic and diverse character? Try out this one.

It's so nice to read a story about not only a female superhero, but a female superhero of color, and one that doesn't have huge breasts and a "perfect body". It's so good. I love it

Since reading this I have been trying to talk all my student into reading it. It is fabulous. The main character is a first generation Pakistan Muslim American who loves comics and geek culture. She struggles with identity issues like many immigrants. Her parents are overly strict and treat her differently than her brother. She wants to participate in the white teenage American mainstream culture. She gains super powers and learns stuff, though her acceptance of who she is was a bit quick. Can't wait to read the next one.
