i liked it much more than nothing but blackened teeth! I think khaw’s prose and vocabulary fits a character such as this one much better, and it gave a story a much more haunting feel
speaking of it was just very brutal and bloody, but also somehow soft? i loved the plague doctor
(sadly i realized the book didnt really fit my sapphic september plot. oh well. in my heart it does )

What a treat! I have been digging myself into a little mermaid rabbit hole for the better part of this year. I was super stoked that this was available at my local library!
Highly enjoyed this tale. The inspiration from The Little Mermaif story is clear, but it evolves to have a life of its own. I appreciated the extensive vocab, even if I had to look some of the words up—I understood that there was a concise meaning that Khaw was aiming for. It’s also worth remembering that fairytales are commonly flowery in language! Nor are they always told in a linear fashion!
Also obsessed with the love story that bloomed between the doctor and the princess. A morbid tale of radical acceptance and redemption leading to an eternity of love is just 🤌🤌🤌

This wild and haunting fairytale was the most gory, poetic love story I’ve ever read. Clocking in at just over 100 pages, it can be devoured in one day, and will leave you spinning. Part little mermaid, part Frankenstein, this story takes place in the dark and lush woods. The gore and cannibalism is consistent throughout, but the writing of it is unmatched. The snap of a cracking neck being compared to the sound of biting into an apple? Not many can pull that off. Khaw, however, makes it seamless.
Man, the vibes were there but the prose ruined it for me. Almost dnf it so many times…
