I thought about DNF’ing this book so many times. And honestly, I should have. It was marginally better than the first book but it still wasn’t good by any means.
While there were slight improvements in the writing, I lost track yet again of how many times things were “missed by an inch”.
This duology is focused around magic and lore that never really gets explained.
The little snippets before each chapter still felt unnecessary to me. It still felt disjointed and I think the duology would’ve benefited from actually explaining things that were briefly mentioned in these excerpts instead of doing the excerpts at all.
I’m not really sure what contributed to me feeling this way, but I just didn’t feel connected to the characters and I didn’t care about them. Katherine Quinn focused so much on the romance that she forgot to develop the world and magic system that they existed within. It just wasn’t good and I don’t understand the hype

DNF 77% — I'm not sure what happened with this book. I enjoyed book 1, but by the time I began reading book 2, I had forgotten some of the major plot points from book 1. I really wanted to enjoy this book more, but it felt confusing. The romance felt rushed and unbelievable. The magic system didn't make much sense to me, and I struggled to care about what was happening. I was going to push through, but I kept forgetting what happened in the last chapter I read.

Physical/audiobook (Libby) - love the continued romance story of Kiara and Jude. The added relationship between Liam (Kiara’s brother) and Jake is adorable. The story does get a bit dry in the middle but there is so many challenging adventurous moments that distract from the romance aspect.
Favorite quotes:
“Apparently all it took for him to give in to his selfish desire was for me to nearly die. Multiple times.” - Kiara
“‘If we were meant to be that high, then we’d be birds’” - Liam
“‘We’re already knocking on death’s door. Why not chat with a couple of angry gods for a minute?’” - Jake
“‘I began to fall in love with you the very second you spoke my name.’” - Jude
