Ironically for a book that has themes regarding wasted potential, The Interestings has a lot of wasted potential. Meandering plot, narcissistic and boring characters, and general lack of direction make this a slog to read

Also you could start a drinking game for how many times Ethan Figman is called ugly.

I didn't go to a fine/performing arts summer camp when I was a teenager, but I totally identify with how a shared love of the arts between young people can be life changing and can form irrevocable bonds. Not only did I experience this myself with my own "Interestings", (The Strollers theatre troupe at OSU), but I see these bonds forming all the time among young people in community theater.

I loved the characters in this book. Some of them went on to forge careers in the arts. Some didn't. As the characters move into young adulthood and middle age, we see them grapple with the idea of the narrowing of possibilities that at one time seemed limitless, of losing the idea of their own specialness. Hey, it happens to most of us.

But the friendships endure. Through financial adversity. Through depression. Through legal trials and tribulations. Through family troubles. And through death. I'm not much of a rereader, but I make go back and revisit Jules, Ethan, Ash, and Jonah one day.

This wasn’t bad. I liked reading it ... but it never really developed into a reason for a book. I can’t tell you where the climax was or how it resolved.

I enjoyed the aspect of following the lives of friends and how they each deal with disappointments in life. However I had a hard time with Jules. She came off as a complainer all the time and her friends took her on every vacation and gave her $100,000....girl your life can be that bad :)
