Pretty good fantasy, with some great epic scenes, and some very violent ones. There's magic, there are dragons, there are wizards and other kinds of creatures. I kinda feel like more of the world should have been explained (in the plot, some things are only introduced when they resolve some key point, which is kinda nice because it keeps things suspenseful, but also seems like it should have been explained earlier).

I find the more that I read about Terry Goodkind and his works, the more that I find that he's a guy who read a fantasy novel, got a general idea on what all it entailed, and decided to write his own version of a fantasy novel while claiming he's changed the genre, with Objectivism moralizing and BDSM psychic blowjob rape to keep things spicy.

I dislike using the word 'hack', as I take the art of writing seriously and I tend to give a lot of writers the benefit of the doubt that they also take the art of writing seriously. Though I remain in doubt on if Goodkind does.

I quit. Gross torture. Gave up 3/4

Loved this book beyond comprehension. Must get the next one. I loved Richard's character - how it changed slightly over the course of the story, bit he remained the quick thinking person he started out as. The familial relationships revealed at the end of the book were a touch cliche, but I'll forgive it that because it was so.

I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. I kept going back to try more. Kind of cheesy writing. Then I looked up more about the book to see if I was the only one. Turns out I'm not. The author's attitude was the final straw for me.

Love it so far. Can't wait to read the whole series.

Let me just say first that when I expected an adult high fantasy, I certainly did not put the term "fast-paced" in the definition of one. I was mentally pacing myself for a slow, overly-descriptive story, with occasional plot points along the way. I thought "Well, I got through Eddings by loving the characters, I can get through Goodkind!" Nevermind that I watched the first Legend of the Seeker TV series to get me interested.

I really was not bored with the pacing of the story at all. Frankly, I thought there were too many events happening. Not only that, there were too many depressing, disturbing, and depraved scenarios that made me cringe whenever I read chapters on my way to work. When I thought things couldn't get any worse, they did. It was unbelievable how much Terry Goodkind tortured his characters. Death was probably the easiest punishment to stomach.

Though I'm not quite sure whether I'm mentally ready for another go at Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, I wouldn't say no to the next book. But that I will read in a far distant future!
