It had an interesting premise in the first 50 pages, but I never really got hooked. I started losing interest about the time Richard and Kahlan arrived at Adie's hut, maybe a little before, anf the Rahl sections that Goodkind slipped in made me extremely uncomfortable. I know he's the villain, but Goodkind's details on what he's like and what his lieutenant is like honestly felt more like a way for him to go "look! Look at how evil these characters are!" Yes, I get it, they're evil. Can I have deeper reasons to hate the guy other than the fact that he's a misogynist and sadist and employs the same?

I was starting to look for a reason to give up here, and that plus the fact that a LOT of the negative reviews mention the same things means this is not a book I want to put more time into.

meh. But will keep going on the series, just because the hype. It must get better. i will have to say, the author seems to have a rather creepy fixation on rape and S&M.

Richard Cypher is a great reluctant hero. He is astute and competent in his own right, but entering the world of wizardry makes him a definite fish out of water. There are some parallels to other fantasy works, like The Dragon Bone Chair by Williams, but this reluctant hero is not so much formed by his experiences. When it all starts, he's an adult, already fully formed. His resistance to change is from the place of already being a man doing an honorable man's work, practicing his trade. It's a level of complexity in the character that was both refreshing and welcome. Highly recommended!

Did not like.  Too graphic on scenes of torture.

Well written, BUT tons of VERY detailed gore.

Incredibly overwritten, but an engaging story - I loved these when I was in my teens... but quickly got sick of Terry Goodkind's secret love affair with Richard, and also the repetitive nature of the Richard-Kahlan story.
Cara is awesome though.

This book was very good. It was written at an easy writing level, making it a simple read. The content was very good. I was on the edges of my seat at the end of the book waiting to figure out the end. In addition, the story line is intriguing. The book has a little bit of romance in it which may appeal to some ladies, but it is also full of adventure. Overall, I thought it was a very good book.
