I disagree strongly with the basic premise of this book.

I remember loving this book as a teenager, but this was my first time rereading it as an adult. Honestly it read like a man's s3xual fantasy. Kahlan is so poorly written. Like he couldn't decide if he wanted a strong independent woman, or arm candy for Richard. So much of the book was sexual for no real reason. I honestly doubt I'll ever read it again. I'll stick to the tv show which was entertaining and not so twisted and lacking plot or growth.

It was kind of meh, it was interesting in the beginning but then I started to predict it.

I devoured this book in 3 days, it was such an action packed adventure. I literally couldn't put it down. The characters are so well put together and the plot twists were incredibly fun to unravel. Some of the big twists were a little predictable, but it didn't take away from the magic. I want more of the world and already ordered the second book. The humor in the book also didn't feel forced which is something hard to find in literature (I like a story that can laugh at itself). I also have to compliment the complex magic system, though I had to admit some of it is a little cheesy in the way classic films are. There was a distinct "old school fantasy" vibe that reminded me of childhood animated films like the black cauldron. If you are into a fun fantasy story with expansive world building you will enjoy it.

I really wanted to like this, but I had to give up at page 70. Horrible dialogue, even worse inner-dialogue, the two main characters are so average and stereotyped it makes me want to kill kittens.

If you're into fantasy, avoid Terry Goodkind.

Mind you, I read "The Law Of Nines" before trying this putrid pile, and guess what? I found it to be one of the biggest pieces of crap I ever stumbled upon, but I had been told that it was Goodkind's worst offering so I was like "let's give the bastard another chance". Seriously: if "Wizard's First Rule" is supposed to be Goodkind's best book, I don't even want to know what's inside his other novels.

Sorry, Terry... I don't like your shit.

This book very nearly got 5 stars from me. And I don't say that lightly.
The primary reason I rate it so high is because I love the characters AND the story. I very rarely enjoy the story as much as I did with this book. I was halfway through the book hoping I was still on chapter 2 and hardly believing it had gone that quickly, I liked it so much. Though I can't say that the book was flawless, as I noticed several things that made me groan or roll my eyes, it was otherwise superbly written in my opinion. I got the book from the library and intend to go buy it tomorrow along with several others from this series so I can own it and read it again whenever I want.
I don't recommend this book to everyone, especially anyone under the age of 18. But I do recommend it if you like epic fantasy, truly getting deep into a characters mind and living the through the story with them, an intelligent wizard who owns the smarts to outwit nearly anyone, and some unique, intriguing magic.
