Wizard's First Rule

Terry Goodkind

A classical Dungeons And Dragon-like tale about a man with magical sword, a mysterious woman, a wizard, some magic and a very, very evil villain.

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book but towards the end it felt rushed and confusing. I wish it were a 100 pages longer and the ending more spun out.

I don't know if I'd read the sequel.. and the 9 sequals after that.

I did not like this book, but I read all of it bc I listened to the audio book w my husband, who sorta liked it. There are a myriad of reasons I did not enjoy this (Goodkind's many ticks as a writer, his small arsenal of physical gestures-- ppl are forever either laughing or crying or balling up each other's clothes in their fists, or even the logic problems with his magic) but I especially resented the representation of women. They're either beautiful and in love w Richard or ugly and wise or terrible. Plus there's a Gollum rip off character so callously copied that it genuinely made me angry.

I managed to finish it. But man, this is an infuriating book. I can live with it being kind of stereotypical fantasy. I was looking for mindless fluff anyway. But the number of times insurmountable problems were just solved because "Oh, didn't I tell you? That's just how things work."

The last chapter in particular (no spoilers) was just so over the top in trying to tie everything together with a big bow that I almost wanted to vomit. My eyes rolled right out of my head and bounced along the floor.

I had set myself the challenge to read the whole series. I maaaaaaay have promised more than I can deliver...

Good, fun read. Moves along quick - lots of action. WAY better than the tv show even though the show is fun on its own.

While the book is enjoyable in itself, it has nothing to offer to the genre at all. Goodkind seems to draw too much from those who came before, especially Robert Jordan. However, the book is still fun and entertaining with a few very interesting characters.

I feel like I need a palate cleanser for my brain. All I want to do is pick up something with dialogue that doesn't make me feel like I'm eavesdropping on an elementary school conversation.

Even with all of the brain cells I just lost reading this, I still recognize that there was an underlying story and it wasn't total sludge. I couldn't have finished it otherwise. It just really needed someone else to write it.

I made it almost exactly half way through this quite long book before I gave up.

Long story short, there were some very graphic scenes that even while skipping full pages were quite uncomfortable, it feels generic, I didn't connect with the characters, and the portrayal of the main female is... difficult to read.
