When I started Baby Teeth I was expecting a light book in verse about a lesbian vampire couple which would be an enjoyable but quick read.
It certainly was an enjoyable quickie but I was also really surprised at the depth within the pages. Grehan merges your normal vampire trope with a darkly beautiful sapphic love story. The theme of desire is alluringly explored within the pages with both Immy's deep love and intense need conveyed so well. While simultaneously the concept of found family is portrayed beautifully and tenderly with the fantastic queer coupling of Freddie and Henry.
The verse format was the perfect choice for this story, the rhythm and cadence worked perfectly in portraying the anguish and anxiety as Immy struggled with her desires and her own morality. The lyrical flow of her inner monologue made it so easy to be swept away and finish in one sitting.
A beautifully tender and intense sapphic vampire love story told in stunning free flowing verse by an Irish female author, what more could you ask for?
Thank you to @dublinbookmum for the recommendation for this one, you've yet to let me down!
