I needed this. Had it on my tbr for a while, but was unintentionally waiting to read it till I needed it (as a NYC transplant, struggling to feel like I belong).

I absolutely adore this book. Jemisin is an amazing author. I loved the way she mixes fantasy with the commentary on the city. It's so well done. This book made me miss New York.

Amazing. I enjoyed this much more than the Broken Earth trilogy (which was also good), perhaps because this novel was set in contemporary NYC. It touches on themes of police brutality, gentrification, racism, sexual assault, and contagion, all while being mostly funny and bighearted. The audiobook was outstanding; the narrator had great accents (to my non-NY ears) for each of the boroughs.
