A love poem to NYC, a Lovecraftian horror tale, a parable about the dangers of gentrification and xenophobia… The City We Became defies genre and rejects labels. I adored the first few chapters, as we met each borough and discovered their powers and vulnerabilities. But once each aspect of the city had been introduced and they embarked on their quest in earnest, I found I wasn’t quite as compelled to keep turning the pages as I have been when reading Jemisin’s other novels. Maybe I missed her intricate world-building. Or maybe I found the symbolism of the Enemy’s White Woman a bit too facile. Nevertheless, I found the book different, quirky, and beautifully written, with a delightful ending.
