My first review still holds true. This is the most well-written, spell binding book I've ever read. I no sooner finish it than I want to pick it up and start it again.
***
This book utterly enchanted me. Almost from the moment I picked it up, it wove a spell around me and didn't let me go. I loved this book from beginning to end, which meant two very late nights because I couldn't put it down. My soul thrilled to all of the mystery and magic, and I could never guess the next point in the plot.

i liked that a lot! there was a lot going on in that book and it was handled very competently. the three main female characters were very well cleaned out and complicated. not in a cliche way, in a realistic way.

This is a brilliant novel.

It is the interwoven tale of three young women, Miryem, Wanda, and Irina, who despite being in very different situations, are all trapped by cirumstance. But all three of them learn to seize opportunity, often using wits and hard work to make their own opportunities, and use their new agency and power to make better lives for themselves.

Although Miryem, Wanda, and Irina and the heroes of this story, there is a delightful cast of characters, many with POV chapters, who are just as fully developed.

All the settings: the winter forest, the Stayk glass mountain, the city of Vysnia, are so well-written they were like characters themselves.

Spinning Silver is full of agency, wits, hard work, and growth. It is also full of sacrifice, mistakes, and hard choices. It's an easy book to read, but it gives you plenty to think about.

And there are delightful lines of prose throughout.

Easily my worst reading experience of the year (and that's really saying something), which ultimately left me in a reading slump.  The content of the book was solid but the execution really didn't work for me.  Thoughts:

-The first 25% was SO slow.  And by the time it sped up I kind of didn't care anymore?
-One of my all-time biggest reading pet peeves is the subtraction of grammatical devices (such as not using quotation marks, not having chapters or paragraphs, etc).  This book had multiple POVs that weren't labeled.  Why?  What was the functional reason for this?  Besides what I can only assume was laziness?  Drove me absolutely nuts.
-There were some weird side threads that didn't really make sense because they weren't really fleshed out.  Such as things that were happening at court.  Those elements were hard to follow because it didn't seem all that important to the plot and we didn't know any of the players.  It was very strange.

-Also (and this is a spoiler so I'll name it as such)
I can't believe Irina and Miryem ended up with those HORRIBLE men.   The tsar was so fucking mean to Irina all the time...and not all of it can be blamed on his demon within.  Also, the Staryk is literally and figuratively the coldest man alive.  What is going on here??

Listen, I'm obviously missing something because this book is incredibly high rated.  And yet, I found myself making the audio faster and faster just to get through it.

I wasn't invested in the characters. The true conflict was just beginning at 50% and I wasn't excited to figure out what happened.
