This book probably has the only kind of miscommunication I can stand. 
As a former slave,  it makes sense that Vali is quick to hide her feelings, and with Ranan spends most of his time isolated, so of course he doesn't always say the right things. 
In the end, they learn how to talk and be together and they're just so fun to read!
