Delightful shoet story set

Set around the theme of Hamilton, this trip of romances was a charmer. Each story was unique but lead into each other.

I'm too sleepy right now to write a real review and part of that is that I have had to stay up late to read this book. 10/10 would stay up late to read again

This was an adorable collection of three romances.

Promised Land

Follows the story of Ezra Jacobs a soldier in Hamilton’s battalion keeping a secret. Ezra is really a women named Rachel, and a captured spy turns out to be her husband who after she faked her death is very much shocked to see her alive. The MCs are both Jewish and this m/f Romance was to die for.

The Prusit Of...

“Their eyes met, and Henry felt a current sweep through him. Him., Henry thought, one hand going to his heart. him. “

Henry & John, two soldiers who should hate each other but instead fall in love. I freaking adored this story and Henry is one of the most precious characters I have ever read about.

That Could Be Enough

“The smile that news caused to grace her face was different from the smiles Andromeda had seen at the grove; she hadn’t even borne witness to half of Mercy’s beauty, it seemed.”

Mercy & Andromeda are two WOC who fall in love by chance. Mercy is Mrs Hamilton’s servant and Andromeda is a successful dress maker who not only runs her own business but is currently pursuing another. Andromeda and Mercy meet when Mrs Hamilton interviews Andromeda for her grandfathers time in Hamilton’s battalion. Sparks fly and lead to a short story I won’t ever forget. I loved this story so much and it’s without a doubt my favorite of three.

Overall I adored this book and I’m so happy to have read it. It was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Highly recommended.

I was very excited to read Hamilton's Battalion because it sounds fantastic: an m/f couple with Jewish mc, an f/f couple with black women mc, and an m/m biracial couple. Courtney is one of my favorite authors, and I have been meaning to read Rose Lerner and Alyssa Cole for a couple of months. So, yeah, I was very excited.

"queer people have always existed, and though society has generally excelled at making their lives difficult and dangerous, there were people who lived as openly as they could and were accepted within their communities."

It surprised me how much I loved it. The stories have so much angst but also hope for the future. It's really what I needed to read now. Especially when I feel like in this country I don't deserve happiness.

A Promised Land by Rose Lerner

Rachel dreses as a man to join the war as Corporal Ezra Jacobs. She thinks she has left her old life behind for good until her husband, Nathan, appears in the camp.

I like second chance romance because the couple knows each other but they have to relearn and accept what has changed. Rachel and Nathan are very funny, they made me laughed so hard. They are hurt and have to navigate the pain to forgive one another. It takes them time to feel like things can work out. Nathan knows he made mistakes before and he is ready now to fix them. It's sweet and beautiful to see a relationship that at first struggles but works out because they talk.

The Pursuit Of... by Courtney Milan

John, a black man fighting for the American side, forgives Henry's life, who is British. Henry feels in debt because he doesn't care about the war and to repay John they travel together to John's family.

Henry is incredibly funny, I laughed so hard. He is honest, kind and likes to talk a lot. Seriously, every time he opens his mouth something hilarious comes out. John is more taciturn but likes to listen. They make a beautiful and perfect couple.

I was worried at first because they're a biracial couple and Henry has many privileges. But the story does address them. John calls out Herny's white privilege, and Henry genuinely wants to do better. They learn from one another and it's lovely.

That Could Be Enough by Alyssa Cole

Mercy is Eliza Hamilton's maid and assistant. Andromeda appears one day to talk about her grandfather. And the romance starts! Mercy tries to bury the emotions that have hurt her so much. SHe is reluctant to let herself feel. Andromeda is so different from her, funny and honest, she doesn't shy away from her emotions.

They are a beautiful couple, kinda slow-burn romance. Their story made me cry so bitterly, but there is also sweetness and hope. Hope that I needed to see in sapphic stories.

I love the concept of this anthology. Three Revolutionary era romances connected by Alexander Hamilton is a great idea and I loved the diversity shown in these stories. They’re all stories told from POVs we wouldn’t normally get in books about the era. However, all of the stories fell flat for me. They all were boring, which surprised me. I don’t know if it’s because they’re all novellas, but none of them had any character development or real stakes. They were just there. It was an admirable try and they were good ideas, but the execution just wasn’t there.

Overall:

I loved these stories so much. Deeply emotional at times, and other times light. I’m not familiar with the musical of Hamilton, so I don’t know all the ways this collection tied to it, but I loved getting these historical romances, seeing Jewish and Black heroes and heroines get their HEA. I loved the Jewish elements in Rose Lerner’s story, and it felt validating in many ways. Courtney Milan’s story is more humorous, but the development between Henry and John was beautiful to see. Alyssa Cole’s story may be my absolute favorite for the emotions and the letters Andromeda and Mercy wrote each other. And one of my favorite elements of the whole collection was the way they tied together, especially by Mercy’s story.

Promised Land by Rose Lerner:

I really liked this. A little slow and confusing at times because I’m not really familiar with all the military and war aspects, but super beautifully emotional. I loved all the Jewish aspects, and a lot of Rachel’s thoughts and feelings felt validating, even though nothing like my own Jewish experiences. A great opposites-attract second chance romance.

Notes:

✡️ war, mention of death, fear of death
✡️ accusations of being a spy, mention of possibility of execution, imprisonment
✡️ mother in law who antagonized MC
✡️ Jewish faith and culture central
✡️ vague mentions of sex
✡️ a shell that lands near MC, explosion
✡️ on page sex, including piv
✡️ transmisia - demanding to see genitals to prove gender; no naked reveal

The Pursuit Of... by Courtney Milan

I really liked this. It didn’t have the same emotional depth of the previous story, but it was a nice, for the most part, amusing story. The last chapter or so was full of emotional depth and I loved the slow burn aspect of John and Henry’s relationship. I also liked that Henry wasn’t allowed to just be idealistic; he had to confront his ideas in such a way that made him more aware of other’s reality. I also loved the cheese and how central it was to the development between John and Henry.

Content notes:

🧀 violence, threat of death, brawl
🧀 references to verbally, emotionally abusive father, belittlement
🧀 racism
🧀 casual ableism
🧀 on page sex - fellatio, anal, manual stimulation
🧀 threat of execution, beating

That Would be Enough by Alyssa Cole

This was a beautiful story, and another more emotional one. I love how vibrant Andromeda is, especially in contrast to how straight-laced Mercy is. I also adored the letter writing, and the development of their relationship. Mercy had been hurt and her lashing out was so painful to read, but understandable. Loved this story so much~

Content notes:

🖊 death of parents, poverty, rough neighborhood
🖊 references to past breakup, MC left for a man
🖊 burned letters, trivializing of writer’s words
🖊 racism
🖊 on page sex - breast play, frottage

Absolutely charming, and loved all the diversity of characters and storylines btw. the three novellas. One regards a M/F Jewish pairing, one a M/M Black/British pairing, and one a F/F both Black pairing. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for something fun set in the times of the Rev war. Hamilton only plays a very minor role in the stories, and in some cases only as a historical figure.
