My 10 year old and I read this together, in about 3 sittings. We enjoyed it a lot. I found some of the details to be reminiscent of The Giver by Lois Lowry, but it's a different premise. I'd recommend it!
It was good but not my favorite. The rest of the books in the series were horrible. Just stop at the first one!
My daughter is reading this in school, and kindly agreed to let me read(reread, actually) along with her. We've read up to chapter 5 to date. Her homework for last night: draw a picture of a scene from chapter 4 and another from chapter 5. Write a paragraph about one of your drawings...
We've both finished, and I find myself liking this book more than when I first read it. It works well for the upper elementary school audience in its directness and simplicity, things that an experienced reader might find a bit predictable aren't for kids just working their way into SF and speculative fiction.

Este es unos de esos libros que quieres leer desde hace tiempo pero sigues postergándolo hasta que llega el momento correcto. He visto la adaptación cinematográfica de The City of Ember varias veces y me llamaba la atención leer el libro. Ahora que lo he leído puedo decir que me gusto mucho.
La película no es la peor de las adaptaciones que existen pero tampoco es de las mejores. Aparte de envejecer a los protagonistas (que es algo extremadamente típico cuando los protagonistas tienen 12 años *cofcofpercyjacksoncofcof*)y algunas tramas y eventos que añadieron para hacer más emocionante y visualmente interesante la película, es una adaptación bastante fiel.
Ember es una ciudad rodeada por la oscuridad. En palabras recitadas en los libros, Ember es la luz en toda la oscuridad. Aunque la oscuridad en Ember es bastante simbólica tambien.
Lina y Doon, nuestros intrépidos protagonistas, son personajes que me gustan. Son diferentes el uno del otro pero no son exactamente opuestos. Tampoco son los fenómenos de la ciudad pero no son más del montón. Tiene metas que cambian con las circunstancias y sueños que siguen en el fondo de sus mentes.
En general es un libro agradable de leer, rápido y con el toque de incertidumbre y suspenso que (en mi opinión) son sumamente necesarios en un libro.

The student book club I joined at EL decided to read this book. I thought it was pretty good, and the idea for it was neat, though this idea of a perfect society is sort of a theme I have been reading in a lot of YA books as of late. It reminded me of "Uglies" and "Feed," etc.
