The City of Ember

I love the world building, the characters, and the plot. To imagine living underground and not experiencing the warmth of the sun, knowing about the different kind of animals, or our history is terrible. It was simplistic for young readers to understand and would keep their interest throughout the story.
This isn't really a spoiler but
SpoilerI didn't see why the grandmother had to die. Lina already have experienced her parents dying and Poppy is at young age not to remember her relatives. I think including Mrs. Murdo wasn't a necessary choice and having the grandmother alive wouldn't have changed the story too much.
This was a minor issue I had but I still enjoyed the book! Would love to read it again.

A fast read. Loved the premise and setting.

Another one that doesn’t hold up well on the adult reread, but it was written for kids, and as a kid, I thought this was the bomb.com.

This book is so fabulous and so imaginative. Definitely read it!!

I liked this book, even though it is for younger readers. I'm interested to see where the series is going and I think its important for kids to read books like this to make them think. I hope the rest of the seies doesn't let me down!

I think this book had a great idea - something bad is happening to earth so they get a few people to start new underground with the hopes of having future generations come back to the surface. Of course everything doesn't go as planned so now Lina and Doon are trying to find a way out of the darkness into the new world above ground. Sounds really interesting and I was excited to start reading. Unfortunately this book is written for a younger audience. I read a lot of young adult books and such, but they are not written like the reader cannot comprehend things. This book was written like you cannot figure anything out yourself so it was hard to read since everything was simplified.

The story was interesting, but it felt like not much happened. It felt like it fell short. There were so many new things to figure out and explore and that was all simplified and a missed opportunity to make the story better. I didn't get the wonder and amazement of the new things as much as I would have liked. That and figuring out how to get out was way too easy. I was hoping for a longer path to follow to figure it all out instead of getting it fairly easily. It was a good idea, but simplified too much to make it a great story.

Final Verdict: 3.25 out of 4.0

Plot/Story:
3 – Plot/Story is interesting & believable.

It is sometime in the future, on planet Earth, and something rather terrible has happened. For reasons not explained (though one would infer nuclear apocalypse), most of the world’s population has been eliminated, and only a small few survive, deep below the Earth, generations after the catastrophic event. They have no knowledge of their true origins, or of what happened centuries before their births. All they know is a group of people named “The Builders” created their city and left it stocked with an inexhaustible amount of supplies. That is – the people of Ember thought their supplies were never-ending. As it happens, the people were to have vacated the city some time ago, using instructions left for them by the builders. They were supposed to have resurfaced and rebuilt their community above ground, before supplies ran out, but those instructions were lost – and it is up to two inquisitive and daring twelve-year-old children, who stumble upon the instructions, to find their way out and get a message to the rest of the city: Egress!

A good YA book. Easy to follow, a quick read, and a good story.
