Let me gush for just a minute. Squeeeee!!!! Fifth Grave Past the Light is my favorite of the series so far. I have to admit that the previous book, Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, was my favorite book so far but Fifth Grave Past the Light totally trumped it! There is Reyes overload in this latest installment and I ain’t mad.
Fifth Grave Past the Light starts a couple of weeks after Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet ends. Reyes now lives next door to Charley. Charley is doing her P.I. thing and Cookie is still my favorite side-kick ever! Thankfully, there isn’t a bunch of outside things going on in this story. The book starts off with Charley trying to catch a cheating husband. That plot fizzles and picks back up at the end. The main story is centered around 27 dead women who show up at Charley’s apartment. Charley is on the case to find their killer and while she’s searching for the killer, Charley suspects Gemma’s new patient/boyfriend.
Let’s talk about Reyes Farrow. The sexy son of Satan. He is determined to have Charley. Charley tries to resist but she can’t and who can blame her? There hasn’t been enough of Reyes in the previous two books so I’m glad he’s back, center stage. He’s now the new cook at Charley’s dad’s bar, Calamities, and he’s creating quite a stir with the female clientage. We find out more about Reyes and Charley’s purpose. Will Charley and Reyes being together really start a war? What was the purpose of Reyes being sent to the corporeal world? Oh while they’re trying to figure out Satan’s big plan, there are some hot sexy times.
I absolutely loved this book. Charley Davidson is a great heroine and her sense of humor never gets old. I will say that sometimes she’s still slow on the uptake. I think at times Charley lets her preconceived notions about people blind her. I love the supporting characters, especially Cookie. I need Darynda to hook Cookie up with Uncle Bob stat! Charley’s sense of humor is never-ending. My favorite part was her using her bootleg GPS app with different voices. My favorite was the Ozzy Osbourne voice. It had me giggling while I was at work.
The ending of this story left me with my mouth hanging open and impatient for the next book. May 20th is so far away!
I’ve had the ARC of Fifth Grave Past the Light (courtesy of Amazon Vine) since June. I tried reading it and I could not. Why? I started this series by listening to it on audio. The narrator, Lorelei King, is awesome. She got me hooked as well as the great characters and the humor. So I started listening to this series. I tried reading FGPtL and I could not do it. I needed Lorelei King’s voice in my ear. This series is the only series thus far where it’s audio only for me.
The Charley Davidson series gets better with each book and that’s what you want with a series. I am hooked and can’t wait to listen to book 6, Sixth Grave on the Edge. I can’t get that cliffhanger ending out of my head! Oh Reyes you sexy Son of Satan you!
If you haven’t started this series, I highly recommend you do. Now!

Libby audio. Would have liked more for the serial murder reveal.
A string of arsons are taking place across Albuquerque and Charley's suspicious of Reyes. She's also dealing with a ghost problem, 27 ghosts to be exact. They're all over her apartment and simply will not pass through her. Charley's left to solve the mystery of how they all died and why they won't leave the Earth. And Cookie has to take a gun safety class. I really enjoyed this book in comparison to others in the series. It's got a fantastic mystery and Charley and Reyes's chemistry is just as spicy as ever. I love you, Charley. Don't ever change.
this series was and is one of the best ive ever read!
Congrats Darynda on another success! This series is just beyond enjoyable and each book just gets better and better. To think we have to wait so long to get #6 in our hands really made finishing this book depressing. I love each and every one of these characters and I am sure to loose count on the number of times this book is re-read.
Me and Charley would have BEST BUDDIES, ofc with Cookie if she was real ...
I loved the book. The series as whole is really funny, and plasters a smile on your face from the first page.
*Sigh* REYES.....

Never disappointed with Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series. Yet again, another amazing book. Still addicted and can't wait to find out what twists, turns, and surprises happen next!
Way better than the fourth book. Faster paced, more supernatural sleuthing and better written. Book 4 supposedly explained Reyes' purpose with Charley, but in 5, we get the "real?" truth from Swopes account of being sent to Hell while on the operating table. A character, "Duff" is introduced, but we don't know if he crosses or not and his purpose for showing up. A teaser is given to us about "Mr. Wong" so, I am assuming we have to read the next book or so in the series to get an answer. I stopped reading the series after the 3rd one because it became monotonous for me... tried the 4th one and swore not to read anymore, but the 5th one was available. I must say, the 5th book has the same pacing and intrigue as the first,, so on I read.
