Disenchanted was a light read and despite its flaws (mainly Lilac having neither a personality nor any semblance of intelligence), I actually had fun. This wasn't one of those books I had to think about too deeply, which is fine. Sometimes, it's nice to just read something and accept it as is, y'know?

The world and lore were fine, possibly the most interesting thing about the book. The characters read a lot like your typical early YA heroines and bad boy love interests. To her credit, Lilac does experience some character growth, but I'm kind of just "meh" about it. Lilac trips and falls down a lot. Mouths are constantly falling open. The dialogue felt a little too modern at times, which threw me off. Oh, and there's also an odd amount of burping and hiccuping (and my personal pet peeve: gasping).

My biggest complaint is that the Kindle version seems to be unedited. There were so many grammatical errors, typos, and formatting issues. Some parts felt as though there were sentences/paragraphs missing. There was also an instance where the same paragraph showed up twice, but on different pages. I have no clue if the same errors show up in the physical copy; maybe they published a draft as the Kindle version by mistake? The price was fairly cheap, but that really doesn't excuse the lack of quality.

(A huge thank you to the MTMC tours and Parliament Press for the eARC and the opportunity to be a part of this blog tour. )

They said witches. They said enemies to lovers romance. They said banter. I said HELL YES and made grabby hands at the book. (I am also really sorry for the ridiculous pun in the next sentence)

~ 5 WAYS DISENCHANTED ENCHANTED ME ~

~ Characters who care about food ~

It's like the most realistic thing for characters to care about sustenance and these characters do! The main character is ridiculously obsessed with pastries and sweets and I 200% approve. Everyone's busy hunting a possibly dangerous creature? Lilac is thinking what a great time to sneak into the pantry and eat yummy food! I'm not saying it was always the right decision but I'm saying I'd be right there next to her hiding pastries behind my back. We stan a princess who cares about food.

~ Monsters big and small ~

There are monsters that wouldn't think twice about having a human for breakfast, there are monsters who would tolerate humans as long as they don't say anything unsavory, there are monsters who are soft and gentle, there are monsters who care but god forbid they let anyone know they care. They are called Darklings and there are vampires and fae folk and what not. There are also witches and warlocks and I just was so intrigued by all the non human characters in the book.

~ Enemies to Lovers means banter ~

Garin is ridiculous and Lilac is also ridiculous and thus ensues mayhem, which I thoroughly enjoyed. there were times when I laughed out loud because the dialogue is so entertaining. And I love those little moments of "So I totally hate him but okay that was really sweet". Their banter is biting at times and soft at times and I was just grinning so much.

~ Character growth for the win ~

Lilac is a sheltered princess; sheltered to limit the citizen's interactions with their "odd" would-be queen. And now Lilac has set out on an adventure into the darkest, creepiest forest. I was so looking forward to the character development and I was NOT disappointed. I liked how Lilac started to see past the propaganda that reaches her within the castle and she took her time trying to understand how the world works.

Garin grew too! He's such a dark and mysterious character and I truly enjoyed getting to know more about him throughout the book and it was fun watching him grow and question things. That said the best thing about him was all that sass. I'm so glad we're getting a sequel because I want more of that!

"You forget the things that humans are capable of, when fear is a strong factor."

~ Morally grey characters who question the world ~

Yes I do love my good boys in books. But I'm also here for morally grey characters who are just trying to survive a cruel world. There are complex characters who have a past and don't always make the best decisions despite having good intentions. The book stresses on how people get to choose who they want to be and I really liked that.

“What is different is not necessarily dark, and even then, darkness does not equate to wickedness. Even then, I'd rather be perceived as wicked than weak, any day. Women are part heaven and hell.”

~ Disenchented is an entertaining tale of adventure with a side of hate-to-love, snarky banter, intriguing monsters, curses and atmospheric settings.~

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It wasn’t what I expected character personality-wise especially the princess. There’s swearing and romance and blood and such sass! I loved how the romance in this book developed. Ophelia's character was also super entertaining. There’s also a scene of attempted sexual assault so just FYI. This book reminded me of ‘Kill the Farm Boy’ by Delilah S Dawson. It almost seemed like a parody of a typical fairytale but I really loved it. I’m so excited to read the next book!

DID NOT FINISH: 34%

DNF @ 30something% | This was an attempted buddy read with Justine (morenamonologues) and Mari (macnbooks). I think this book was the start of my reading slump. Ok, work definitely was the big factor, but damn this book didn't help at all. While the premise was interesting enough, I couldn't get past the juvenile writing and laughable dialogue. I was reading this at the same time as Faker and honestly? I much preferred Faker and lord knows I Did Not Like that book.

Between these two "romance" books? At least I was able to finish Faker.

I think if I was younger and didn't know better (aka haven't read better fantasy/romance books by better writers) I might have liked this book well enough. But I didn't like this because I have read better written fantasy books.

Anyway don't recommend this book. Moving along now.

“ What is different is not necessarily dark, and even then, darkness does not equate equate to wickedness. Even then I’d rather be perceived as wicked than weak, any day.”
Brianna Sugalski, Disenchanted Ch 25

All of the stars for Disenchanted! Lets just give Sugalski a whole galaxy as she created a magical world that I find so magical as well as comforting. This book feels like a friend that I can always come back to when I am feeling sad or just in need of a hug!

Disenchanted by Brianna Sugalski is an enchanting tale that I fell in love with from the start! The story Sugalski tells us is about a young princess, Lilac Trécesson, who has the ability to speak the language of the Darklings that live in her kingdom; a curse to her parents, a threat to her kingdom, but a saving grace to Darklings who seek equality. Nonetheless with her coronation being less than a week away she is desperate to rid herself of the wickedness that is inside her. When she receives a note from a witch promising to help her she takes her chances with the enchanted forest of Brocéliande all in the hopes that she can become the queen everyone wishes her to be. TW attempted rape.

What I enjoyed the most about Disenchanted were the characters. Lilac our protagonist is a young woman who is brave, smart, compassionate and loves her baked goods. I found myself laughing and crying along with her as she made her way through the forest. Through her journey we see her grow and develop, but she stays true to herself. As she and the reader learn more about the magic that she was kept from she learns what she has to do to take control and own her crown!

“Lilac was princess, not a flower. Just because she donned tiaras and gowns didn’t mean she was delicate, or incapable of slitting a Darklings throat.”
-Chapter 1

And then there’s Garin oh sweet Garin. The swoon worthy vampire who thinks he’s all that, but he’ll soon prove that he is all that with a big heart as well. His wit and chemistry with Lilac; their banter are some of the best scenes.

“ ‘Garin.’ Lilac gasped and spun toward the familiar voice that floated from the trees behind them….Smirking wildly, the vampire emerged from the shadows. ‘But you knew that.’ He winked at her, his mouth stained the color of cherries.”
-Chapter 6

I also want to compliment the world that Sugalski created which she has filled with so many magical creatures. There was a balance between new and familiar creatures; vampires and witches are well known to fantasy, but then there were Will-O-Wisps, korrigans from Breton folklore. All of the creatures made for a fun read as you didn’t know what to expect next.

So if you like fantasy books about sassy princesses and witty vampires that ring close to the movie Tangled, Ella Enchanted, and The Princess Bride: READ (Or LISTEN to the audible) THIS MASTERPIECE.

I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this books. Once you get into it, it is extremely difficult to put down. I enjoyed Lilac and Garin’s character and found their romance entertaining, even though it was a little insta lovey. I also found it difficult to see how Lilac could love a vampire who kills people, but whatever. The forest was an interesting setting and I enjoyed the tavern setting as well. A unique fantasy world with entertaining characters.

I LOVED THIS BOOK SOOO MUCH AND CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!

I’m giddy!!! I just finished Disenchanted and I don’t want to leave this amazing, captivating world!!!! Not to mention I WANT MORE OF GARIN & LILAC...NOW!!!!!!

The main characters were so real and flawed, but watching them grow and falling in love with them was everything I want in a story!!!! The other characters that they meet up with in the story have me intrigued, I’m looking forward to reading more about the characters of this magical world!!!!

Speaking of the world!!!! The world building was freakin AMAZING!!!! I could smell the smells and fear the creatures that Lilac did. This book came alive in my hands!!!

Brianna Sugalski is a phenomenal writer. She’s a master at putting everything she sees in a way that we can feel it and visualize it. I’m looking forward to so much more from her!!!
