I don’t know if I liked it enough to read the next book in the series.
Things I liked:
Things I liked:
- Human Princess who can speak the language of magic users
- FMC is realistic- chubby, curious, and not gifted in battle
Things I didn’t like:
- The tension between the MMC and the FMC started great, but quickly fizzled
- The politics were kind of dizzying because it was unclear whether the people and Lilac’s family would support her.
- The elf plot was unnecessary
I LOVED THIS BOOK SOOO MUCH AND CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!
I’m giddy!!! I just finished Disenchanted and I don’t want to leave this amazing, captivating world!!!! Not to mention I WANT MORE OF GARIN & LILAC...NOW!!!!!!
The main characters were so real and flawed, but watching them grow and falling in love with them was everything I want in a story!!!! The other characters that they meet up with in the story have me intrigued, I’m looking forward to reading more about the characters of this magical world!!!!
Speaking of the world!!!! The world building was freakin AMAZING!!!! I could smell the smells and fear the creatures that Lilac did. This book came alive in my hands!!!
Brianna Sugalski is a phenomenal writer. She’s a master at putting everything she sees in a way that we can feel it and visualize it. I’m looking forward to so much more from her!!!

“I’m at least glad I won’t have to reveal my life story with my interrogator lounging in a tub.”
What do you get when you cross Grimms fairy tales with “Princess Bride”? You get a smart, sassy, coming-of-age adventure. Lilac is the closeted princess who finally makes her first real decision in her life, and she runs away. She has an excuse: her darkling tongue is abhorred by the populace, and she wants to lead them. Unfortunately, her sassy tongue is all she has to protect her. She meets Garin at an inn in the Broceliande Forest, where the darklings hide, and they subsequently hit it off. He follows her like gum under her shoe. Their dialogue just carried me away.
I also loved the witch they meet at the end. I really want to read more about her. Lilac’s quest all along was to meet this witch and remove her curse, but the witch’s solution made me almost fall off the couch with laughter. Lilac’s betrothed is also a piece-of-work, Sinclaire is the entitled rich guy who is willing to rape her, hold a knife to her, and drag her to the coronation as “consort.” Douchebag.
This is young adult only in that Lilac needs to learn how to make her own decisions. She is led along by Garin, the Fairy King, Sinclaire, her parents, the witch. All make her decisions for her. I expect there will be a second novel with growth, but this story was so complete I could stop here and be content. I enjoyed this more as an adult, because this is Grimm. LOL.

This story is everything!
Disenchanted has all the ingredients for an top notch fantasy romance - flawed and misunderstood MCs, slow(ish) burn enemies to lovers, sarcastic witty banter, sexual tension, a journey through a dangerous forest,… I could go on. Lilac, our FMC is an absolute badass crown princess who is both vulnerable and incredibly self-assured. Garin, our MMC is quintessential shadow daddy with a slightly skewed moral compass and an incredibly endearing personality.
The book moves quickly and there are a fair few adventures along Lilac & Garin’s journey which all built up to the climax of the story + paving the way for stories to come.
I’m normally happier reading dual POV romantasy but being in Lilac’s head only (except for 2 short chapters) both offered amazing character growth as well as keeping the mystery of who Garin is and what his real motivations are. In fact, in a way I still feel like I don’t know all there is to know about him.
The main villain is truly vile; there are two scenes in the book that deal with SA which may be triggering. He gets his comeuppance in the end, don’t worry. I also absolutely loved that our MMC is described as tall, thin & lanky, and our FMC has a penchant for pastries; I’m all for normalizing body shapes in romantasy (he’s a vampire for ch*stsake, he doesn’t need to be built like Gaston to be strong).
I am awaiting Disillusioned (book 2) with bated breath!

DNF-meh couldn't really stick through it. Interesting world, maybe not enough worldbuilding but i really didn't like the FMC nor the MMC so that's that.
(i don't trust kindle unlimited from now on)

An interesting journey to accepting oneself and to strive for greatness.
Lilac has a lesson to learn. Well several if we are honest. She is a bit of a push over even at the end she had to be saved. She showed hints of her backbone only to wait for her hero or fate to save the day.
The storyline was predictable but fun. I figured out who the witch was fairly early and it was rewarding to see I had guessed correctly.
Garin was comic relief and our poor tortured hero. He was interesting and I shipped them as a couple. He made her better and stronger. She gave him hope and a second chance at love.
I am interested in seeing how the story will progress since several things at the end hint at a sequel.

⚰️ Mini Review ⚰️
This was a very pleasant surprise. I first got the book solely for the cover. I didn't know it was about vampires, so imagine my surprise when BOOM! vampires! Then I was automatically hooked. I liked this one and I really want to keep reading this story. I've heard she revamped this book and is making more, so we'll see where this goes.
