This was... Meh. I generally don't like self-help books because I find so many of them to be equivalent to fortune cookies or newspaper zodiacs, and this was more of the same. At least the author has a nice voice.

So i have committed to reading “self-help” and/or personality development books this year - at least one a month. The tag line of the book is “Get out of your head and into your life.”

I recently left a traumatic (not being dramatic, I swear) work experience, which, in turn, led me to become a very insular person. I retreated very much into myself and into my mind. And although I have a great new job and I am turning a corner, I needed some help to really start healing and getting back into exploring and living my life.

I always start reading any self-help books with a modicum if cynicism. I read “You Are A Bad Ass”, liked it, but in the end felt I couldn’t relate. All the examples she provided made me feel almost inadequate! Some good life tips, but from a place of privilege to which I couldn’t relate.

In “UnF*ck Yourself”, Bishop doesn’t talk about all of his life experiences that make him great. He doesn’t even really try to market his product until the last chapter. Ultimately, he is giving guidance about how to develop personal mantras to get into your life. I did feel the cynicism start to wash away because this is what I needed to hear and take some time absorbing.

Am I about to sign up for his coaching or any conferences or workshops he does? No. I am not one to join any type of fandom or cult of self - help. But for the situation I am currently in, the affirmations he provides are realistic and applicable and are things I need to better adjust to my new and different life.

There were some worthwhile nuggets of information in this book but I found it repetitive.

Not bad advice!  I've always wanted to open a second-hand store.  Perhaps I'll take his advice and get out of my head and into my life!!!

Maybe other books said the same things, with other words, or with many more examples. But this one clicked for me and I will be forever thankful that I listened to it (lived for the accent).

I got some good shit done in my life actually thanks to it!

Reality Check

No more excuses. Stop thinking and start doing. This book was a great self check. Just the boost I needed to get to work on a few things.

That was the inspirational kick in the ass I need sometimes. :-) Nothing really new, but delivered in a motivating way that takes less than 4 hours to complete. The author's voice didn't fully appeal to me although he does a nice job emphasizing his messages, so 4 stars for the audio book.
