A family dealing with the aftermath of the matriarchal sister’s incarnation. Heavy and a little choppy but a really interesting, powerful story of family dynamics.

I should have checked trigger warnings….

This book was uncomfortable for me. Maybe just because I didn’t feel like being confronted with all my deepest insecurities and it did that. Am I a good mother? What does that mean? Am I doing the best I can for my community or am I selfish? Am I too smart to believe my value lies in how much food I put in my body or am I just like all the other women? It was hard for me to get through for these reasons but I did find the characters realistic and I thought she did a great job exploring all the issues women face with all the characters. But ugh bulimia is gross to read about. Not that it’s not important, it’s just so gross.

Michigan.

Excellent narrators. Story just dragged for me. I don't think Protor's perspective should have been included with this title.

I had a very hard time getting into this book. There are a ton of narrative changes - it’s told from the perspective of three sisters - and I found it difficult to place the story into any particular time period for a long while. There’s a lot that goes unsaid in this book, from the simple “this is where this character physically is right now” to the deeper things unsaid between all the characters. That said, it’s beautifully written and a good depiction of the way that trauma affects us all, and of the way family relationships impact our lives in huge ways.

Enjoyed the book, feel like there were some holes(but it a stretch) and confusing monuments but overall good

You know going in that this is the story of a seriously dysfunctional family, but I anticipated being able to relate to at least one of the characters. Sadly, I couldn't. Still, it was a moving story that ended with a tone of hope. If you like literary fiction with lots of reality and depth, this might be the book for you.

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway and was asked to give an honest review. This book was rich, each character felt fully realized, and the story kept me engaged. There were some passages that were difficult to read related to physical and emotional abuse and eating disorders, so be wary if those are issues that are triggering for you.
