Still the best isekai novel I've read so far (not that I've read many), just wish it was more focused on the actual exploration of Aincrad instead of side plots that end up also being badly explored. The novel needed to be bigger.
I loved the anime when I first watched it and along with Ready Player One gave me a strong interest in LitRPG. So for me this was the starting path of that new genre, other much older books deal with similar subject matter but for me this is the best. 4 1/2 stars.
I'm fortunate in that I have a copy of the audio book Peter Lucky, a professional voice actor released on Youtube before he forced to take it down. DreamstoryTheatre
If you are a fan of the anime or just looking for a good solid adventure story you can't go wrong with this book.

Super fast paced - leaves a lot out (hopefully will be covered in other novels) - just like the anime w/ a little extra - gives more info on how kirito really feels which is left out of the anime
After finishing the anime (essentially twice), I've decided to turn to the source material which is actually a novel-style instead of the typical manga-style, which was very nice.
I'm very surprised at how many differences there are between this book and the anime. Sachi is only mentioned in passing. Yui, Liz, and Silica aren't mentioned at all. So I'm curious as to how that will all play out in future novels.

Okay so as someone who had watched the anime but is more of a reader, I was excited that the original novels were being officially translated. And now that I've finished it, I'm glad that I did.
The opening wasn't what I expected. I thought that it would maybe start with them starting the game rather then starting it in the present then looking back early on. It worked though and it did help set the story.
Character wise, my opinions didn't change much. It made me so happy to read Klein's bits as he's amusing and a good character. There was one character that I didn't really like was Asuna. Now, I wasn't fond of her anyway but for a little bit of the novel, I was starting to warm to her. She was amusing and mostly strong and then you get her saying she'd commit suicide if Kirito died. She's 17 years old and she hasn't had much chance to meet anyone without fear of them dying for two years. Excuse me if she sounds whiny and dumb and that just made me hate her all over again.
Majorly excited for the second book and the side stories in it! I've already seen that Silicia is on the front cover and I want her story as well as Lisbeth's.

Who am I trying to kid? This is SAO! You're obviously reading this because you watched the anime. And obviously, it didn't disappoint. If you're not listening to this, you're missing out since the voice actor of Kirito narrates the book.
The only downside was that if you watched the anime. The filler with side characters is actually book two. So what I would recommend is go till you reach almost the finale of this book, then stop finish book 2 and then come back. Best part is that the voice actor for Asuna voices the female characters. I'm loving this Renaissance of new audiobook version of light novels narrated by the voice actors.
4.5 out of 5
