4.3 AVERAGE

ok... i was unclear what to think of this series after the first book; it was incredibly slow paced and took me months to get through because it felt like there was no point to the story even though i was enjoying spending time in this world and with these characters. not having an objective was hard.
this book though has all the aspects of the fisrt book that i so adored annnnd it had a point! so i loved loved loved it. we also got to learn more of what is going on and the history of the world. we got to spend more time with some of the best fucking characters ever so i'm a happy girl now.
in case it wasn't apparent i thoroughly enjoyed reading this and i´m super excited for the next installment <3

7/10?

Not sure how I feel about this one. Not as good as the first book, somehow felt even more like a setup book. If the payoff in book three isn't big, I will be kind of annoyed.

Let's start with the good. The characters are fantastic. Great development throughout this book, Glokta's chapters were highlights. Logan's group was also fairly interesting. This really feels like a story you read to see the characters grow and live in their own world.

The bad. Why does it feel like 90% of the books I read these days have the first 80% of the book be the characters meandering about, then all the action and important stuff happens right at the end. I get it, they want you to buy their next book, but cmon. Halfway through this book I was bored. The Northern campaign plot just did not interest me.

Also, who uses "Uh" for acknowledgement? Glad he stopped saying Er... so much at least.

Will I read the third book? Yea. But if the payoff isn't great, probably won't continue with this world for a bit.

4,5/5
Joe Abercrombie knows how to write a second book in a trilogy and in the introduction he even claims that those are his favorite books to write! I love how little Before They Are Hanged is about the plot, but don’t love how much it’s about war. Especially towards the end the war scenes got too long for my liking. And, I would love to see more female characters. Though because the male ones are so well developed and lovely in their vulnerability, I'm willing to look past this. For now at least.

Good not great. The pacing is odd. Much more violent than the first one. Definitely a middle of the trilogy book. Really hoping book 3 wraps up the story well.

5/5⭐️

Abercrombie strikes again!
He just cant write a book under 5⭐️!

Oh my god. This book was a shitstorm of epic fight scenes and suspenseful politics.
And I fell more in love with Logen Ninefingers in this book than I did the last. Gods, I love this psycho.

I also have never been more attracted to a crippled, skeptical inquisitor. San Dan Glockta indeed is bae and will always be bae.

Besides the fangirling, I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. Some parts more than the first book. I really love getting into the nitty gritty of world politics in contrast with Ninefinger’s conflict.

The pacing was perfect. Writing was beautiful.
I cannot fault this book except the fact that it ended.

PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVEN’T
TY

Warning you as I should, this is a "just finished the book" kind of review.
In short, it was almost too damn good.
Read it in a couple of sittings, loved the characters and they remain the main course and a very tasty one at that. The plot is still very enjoyable, even though I thought a little more would be wrapped up by the end. Oh well, it is the middle book. The plot marched on, building up nicely and with enough twists to keep it interesting. I trust Abercrombie to tie it up nicely in the third and final one.
I spoiled myself, learning of one death too early. I was still sitting there, eyes stuck to the page hoping that the time had not come, it had however. It made me sad that one, just the same as the one going back to be mud in the first one mad me angry.
Abercrombie still writes very well and I cannot honestly see what it is some people are complaining about. All I hear of his writing is that it keeps getting better and that makes me happy, even though I find it to very good already.

I will move on to Last Argument of Kings swiftly and excitingly.

If you have not read Abercrombie, please go ahead.

Wow so good. I love love love Jezal. Glokta's storyline was insane. And I am ever more so suspicious of Bayaz. I can't fathom were book 3 will go.
