Some excellent scenes at the beginning and ending, but the middle scenes leave a lot to be desired. Worth reading

Rather disappointing. He sells his soul for limitless knowledge then wastes his time doing the stupidest, most trivial things.

Interesting take on the Faust tale; especially, compared to Goethe's version. But I still like the version by Goethe more.

I read this play a little over a year ago, and honestly found it boring. I then had to analyze the hell out of it for a class, and after doing such close reading and interpretation, I found that it was actually enjoyable. HOWEVER. I just reread it, and upon this reading, I found so many things that made me absolutely love it. I didn't give Marlowe the credit he deserves. Within the first act, I was hooked.

Finished!
I actually really really liked this play! I read it alongside watching the production by Oxford Theatre Guild in 2013 (found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V97pMacSp-0) which was a great production.
I think the Christian narrative throughout that questions some of the foundations of the faith and the constant dialogue between good and evil was really interesting - especially when looking at Faustus's desire for power, knowledge and fame. I loved the good and evil angel/devil dynamic that acted as dynamics of his conscience too, this definitely added to the comedy of the play.

Definitely looking forward to studying this in a couple of weeks time!

Maybe this works much better when performed or I need more time to digest it but I don’t find this a compelling read

Way too much reliance on spectacle and too little on plot. Buildup of conflict is sorely lacking, and limited to just a few lines of cursory dialogue such as those between a “good angel” and a “bad angel”

Lastly, on the ending—I’m fine with it being wholly predictable, but the catharsis doesn’t feel earned. Granted, Faustus is established as a man with somewhat of a moral compass and a sense of responsibility towards his peers, but for the most part it’s quite straightforward that he just aims to attain personal knowledge and prestige. There’s no subversion of expectations or any stakes established that allow me to empathise with him…
