An intense story with gorgeous images and dialogue, where the dark is a comforting friend and ally. A wonderful tale about overcoming fear and finding comfort in the solitude of your own home.

I picked this up because of Jon Klassen, and was not disappointed. The illustrations are gorgeous and tell the story in such a beautiful way. The writing is fine ("mid" lol) - honestly I think this could have been published without words and it would have been equally as strong a narrative.

Not at all what I expected from Snicket. A lovely story with very good illustrations, thanks to Klaussen (who...I will admit, I really don't care for as an author).

The art is fantastic, but I honestly don't think that this book gave any real reason to not be afraid of the dark. The concept was great, but the story fell a little flat, and honestly felt lacking. I read this one to my four-year-old niece, and it might have gone past her, as she actually felt scared once I finished, so I had to go back and explain it to her. I suppose my expectations going in were a bit high (since, c'mon, Lemony Snicket), but while the writing was fantastic, I still did not care too much for the story.

What a great narrative about facing your fears! Mixed with Jon Klassen's brilliant illustrations, Snicket's story takes us into the mind of a little boy who is afraid of the dark.

A wonderful look at fear and the dark, and the reality of why the dark must exist...

Laszlo is afraid of the dark, but the dark lives in the same house as him. During the day, it is confined to a specific corner of the basement, but at night, the dark spreads. It has never visited him before, because Laszlo always keeps the dark at bay with his flashlight. But one night, his flashlight goes out, and the dark is there. Many young children will understand Laszlo's fear, and will like the slight humor thrown in at the end.
