I have seen most of the anime version of this series, but have never read the manga. I actually picked this volume up because my younger cousin is interested in all things anime, so I thought it'd be a good one for him! I ended up reading it before him because I wanted to make sure there was no inappropriate content in it (He's 11 years old). Thankfully, there were only a couple of cuss words and no sexual content, so I am going to give it back to him to read! The anime actually followed the manga pretty well! I enjoyed both versions, so if you decide to read this, watch the anime to see the characters come to life! Highly recommended!
You know what?
I’m not sure what to make do this. It was a good read but man Yato is definitely a piece of work. The world building and the introduction of the various spirits and gods is really interesting. I’ve had this on my TBR for a while, and I’m actually glad that I finally picked it up! I’ve great things about the anime so I’ll be sure to check that out soon.

I am enjoying the story and curious what happens to the girl we met versus the main character. May want to check out the rest of the story later.
Noragami means "Stray God" and its quite fitting.
The set up is everything. I watched the anime years ago yet failed to ever pick this manga up despite that cliffhanger..
Needless to say, I love the panels and stunning art work. I love the characters and their complexities. They make the world of Noragami so much more. The insight each character add gives to building the world and its problems and I love the slow burn of it.
Yato the stray god has fallen out of favor as times have changed; however, he hasn't given up and faded from existence. He lives on through the small favors and wishes requested of him. It's honest work and it's touching how he yearns for recognition (even if it is just one single person).
I love the plot twist Hiyori adds to the already full plate Yato has. She becomes half-dead too easily (her body falls asleep and her spirit roams free) and it poses a risk of her accidentally putting herself in danger. Not only is her tail the only thing keeping her tethered to the world of the living but also attracts too much attention from the other spirits (the corrupted ones). Yukine is adorable as a little spirit but very angsty as a teen. He's still very adorable. I cant wait to see how this develops and grows each of them through their adventures together.

This one I bought because it popped up on a few 'best of' lists. I've never heard or it nor seen the anime (Shall rectify that). Unlike many of the new ones I've tried lately, this one really clicked with me.
The first few chapters set up Yato well. This is woven tightly with Japanese culture and polytheistic beliefs (there are extensive translator notes in the back which were interesting). Yato is at the bottom of the polytheistic pecking order. He is a god with no shrine, no home, no believers (hence the stray god in the title). He has put his name and number all over the place and people who are in the middle between the world of the living and the far shore of the spirit world can see it.
He is called on when a bullied young girl sees his ad for help in a school bathroom stall where she is crying. This sets something of the tone. We learn about the ayakashi (yokai) who can be seen by children, animals and people in the middle with a foot in the land of the living and the far shore. Mutsumi explains her problem. The kids pick on her, some waiting for her to crack, others seeming to look forward to her suiciding etc. The school is covered by the ayakashi who are drawn to negativity.
Yato is far more interested in explaining his plans to be top god some day. Hanki his shinki cautions him more than once to 'read the room.' Yato isn't as sympathetic as he could be. Yes Mutsumi is considered an attention-grabbing 'sick-faking' cheat by her classmates but Yato doesn't hesistate to call her on the fact that in some ways they are right. By the end, we have a better understanding of Yato who isn't quite in touch with mortality and of the system this manga in operating in. By the time Mutsumi is sorted out, Hanki, the shinki (a person who can transform into a spiritual weapon, ala Soul Eater) has quit and Yato enters the next arc at a severe disadvantage.
Now not only homeless and worshipper-less, Yato is now weapon-less against the Ayakashi. He hits rock bottom when a little boy (because as mentioned kids can see him) hires Yato to find his lost cat. While he's doing this, Yato crosses paths with Hiyori, another school girl. It's a fateful meeting. Hiyori gains a new power that she can barely control. Yato finds himself a companion in Hiyori who loves wrestling and is raised by a mom who can think of one thing - marrying Hiyori off well.
It's much more complicated than I'm making it sound (don't want to spoil anything). Yato is compelling, not so much when he's crowing about how great he'll be but in the quiet, vulnerable moments. Hiyori looks like she'll be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this.

I choose to read the first volume at least, only because Yato seemed diferent kind of character. And yes, he is different than other shounen protagonists. Firstly, he is a god. ( one of the minor gods out there ). He has a wish to build his shrine. He is clever and funny. He acts mature and also childish.
And also there is Hiyori, which I liked quite a lot. She has nearly died and now trapped in two dimensions and can leave her body occasionally. She wants her body back to normal.
The story seems cliche spirit-demon-action -battle thing, though. I am sure the plot will get deeper and become complex. Lastly, I liked the artwork a lot. Yato is especially drawn handsome.^^
