At the start of this book I didn’t know if I liked the direction it was taking, but I’m glad I stayed along for the ride. I almost want to give this 5 stars, but I was missing a bit of emotional connection to the side characters; however, the complexity of this story and all of the thought processes behind it have to be applauded. This book has way more layers and politics than the first, but Spensa manages even more character development and finds out hidden truths about herself and the galaxy. This series is quickly becoming a “must read” recommendation from me.

The second book in this series did what I love so much about the REd Rising series, which is it opened up the world... extremely. In the first book we follow our main character and the humans fighting for their lives against constant alien warfare on a planet called detritus. In book two, we see our main character leave this planet and get to know what is beyond her previous borders. There’s an entire universe out there. A universe with complex politics, alien species, and a whole new cast of characters. This is definitely the most alien focused book i’ve ever read?

I am giving this book three stars, because I kind of missed the previous cast of book one. I still think the writing and characterization of our main character, Spensa, is strong and I liked the newer editions but I missed our crew of Skyward flight. This book had a lot more action sequences in it than the first (so that’s saying something) -- and I find action sequences harder to follow along when reading vs. watching. I will still be continuing the series.
