on the one hand i really enjoy books that use a specific product or tool as a mule to look at human history, and the parts of history that the author went into detail about were really interesting. on the other hand there were several brief remarks on other moments in history that were not incorrect but were rather simplistic and my brain could not let go of this

Beer, wine, distilled spirits, tea, coffee, and cola - 6 drinks that defined 6 separate eras of human history and shaped the course of future events. Lots of interesting facts here and very interesting reading. I wish that history classes of my youth had been as thought-provoking and entertaining! I especially liked the epilogue.

Good summary of history, I’d suppose, but not for me. I had to read this for school.

Really, really interesting read. A great book that has left me with lots of interesting facts, and chronicles literally the history of civilization from a refreshing perspective. It's a little slow...but in a way not uncommon to nonfiction for myself. Just because it's interesting doesn't mean it's always CAPTIVATING, and that's why I gave it a rank of 3.75 stars. It kept me wanting to read more, but in smaller pieces.

All in all, a great book I'd recommend to anyone who's a lifelong learner and a student of the world.

A very, insightful look at the history of six global beverages. A light, fun read.
