When I was in high school we read a Perfect Day for Bananafish, which opens this collection. It was certainly gripping with a gut punch ending, but like with Catcher in the Rye, I failed to see exactly why we were studying Salinger.
Reading this collection all these years later, I still feel it is the weakest story, but only because the rest are absolutely incredible. Each an agonizing view into someone’s pain and introspection, but holding us at enough of a distance that you need to crack the shell and dig out the meat. While the stories are frequently amusing, there is a deep melancholy that seeps into you. Every story’s conclusion saw me put down the book and consider what I had just read, the ice picks that shattered the illusions of happiness in each character. I can’t recommend this collection highly enough.
Favorite: Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut. Brutal.

the stories are great, die übersetzung der ausgabe von 1968 leider nicht so.
