Teddy - a very intriguing story, it made me think about life and death (specifically , reincarnation and spiritual elements of it) more deeply than before
De Daumier's Blue Period - very engaging, I liked the stage setting and it was one of my favorites
The Laughing Man - expert storytelling within a story
For esmé with love and squalor - like many others in this anthology it touches upon war, but happens to be the only one which occurs partially set within the European theater. I liked the duality of meeting esmé, getting her letter in occupied Germany, and the initial instance of wishing he could go to her wedding w his wife when back in the u.s. three time jumps!
Down at the dinghy - very easy to pass thru, did not get it much
Pretty mouth and green my eyes- what the heck J.D.

Banana Fish is one of my favorite stories ever.
I had a classmate in school - 7th, 8th grade maybe - named Esme. She had a nervous habit of quietly pulling out her eyebrows until there were almost none left. I've never forgotten her, or how she looked and acted as much of an outsider as I felt inside. We didn't go through high school together so I have no idea what became of her, but I still think of here every time I hear the name Esme. It's a great name, but those balding eyebrows kind of killed it for me so I couldn't use it for my own child.
This all happened in the same class where another girl used to store food in her cheeks after lunch, and snack on it through the rest of the day. We called her chipmunk behind her back.
NAyway, I did like this book of short stories.

Wow! I loved this! A slow and depressing start, but I was engrossed and fascinated by the lives of these people. Salinger has a masterful way of revealing inner lives through external actions. Makes me think he would have been a great film director.
