Oh Salinger, you crazy genius. Sometimes I don't understand a thing you're saying but your stories rarely leave me unmoved. So much humanity, so much love, loneliness and true sorrow radiate throughout these stories and it is beautiful.

I started this a year ago because originally it was my “transit book”. I would read it on the bus or train. When COVID hit I wasn’t too keen on reading it, as it seems I needed a situation to force me to. The Catcher in the Rye is my all time favourite book but I feel like these stories just don’t capture Salinger’s strengths as a writer. The plots weren’t very engaging and I hated every single character in every story. I still look forward to reading Franny and Zooey but I had to force myself to finish this one.
DNF. I found the stories to be disjointed, short, and kinda pointless. This book is not for me.
Liked the writing, humor, characters in general, in each story. The plots maybe not so much, probably full of symbolism that I didn't catch.
I loved this little collection and at the same time I hated how it made me feel. After each story Salinger managed to evoke all sorts of emotions in the realm of unease and sadness. My favourite stories were “Pretty Mouth and Green Eyes”, “A Perfect Day for Banana Fish” and “Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut”. The majority of the stories played out in a seemingly mundane conversation within mundane circumstances, however that was suddenly followed with a profound realisation or a profound happening.
The use of language is so beautiful throughout this whole collection. The sentences are rich with unique adverb and every word matters.
