DID NOT FINISH: 20%

Not enough of characters from The Acolyte show.

Really liked the show. Enjoyed  the plot, the characters, the mythos and the intrigue.

Rowh was great in the  show and this book helps fill in some background for her mannerisms and personality, but for readers that were previously uninterested in the novels of SW, this didn't do much to change that perspective. High political, bureaucratic, and philosophical content specific to the SW universe, and decent audio production with theme music and sound effects - but hard to get into the world as as a novice since the world of SW is very thoroughly built and this work seemed geared to readers more familiar with the canon.

DID NOT FINISH

I was really hoping for more substance related to the Acolyte show. This book barely referenced Vernestra's relationship and history with the padawan that became Qimir, and the plot had almost nothing to do with the events of the show. I imagine they're probably holding off on publishing spoilers in case they do another season, but come on, you gotta give us SOMETHING.

I think this is a pretty frustrating book; aside from a younger Indara, it doesn't really have a lot to do with the Acolyte. It reads more like an epilogue to the High Republic touching on an unresolved element from the first phase. As such, it feels very premature; Trials of the Jedi has yet to release, and many of the plot threads remaining there have yet to wrap. Indara as well does not really resemble the character viewers see in The Acolyte, and while it could be argued that a long time has passed between the events of Wayseeker and The Acolyte, I don't feel like we see Indara make choices that resemble the character she becomes in The Acolyte. But it's Vernestra that frustrates me most in this book. It's pretty clear to me that Ireland feels very protective of the character, and as such there is a gulf between where we see her in Wayseeker and where we see her in The Acolyte, and I can't really find a way to reconcile the two. The appearance of other High Republic luminaries only serve to further the distance between the High Republic only serve to deepen the divide of what was supposed to be a reconciliation between the two stories. The conflict is deeply uncompelling as well; The High Republic seems to have a real tendency to write "answers" to Jedi, instead of writing characters that can meet a Jedi's match. This book is no different; the problem here is a "lightsaber-off" device, a conflict so uninspired it makes one long for the Nameless. The villain is deeply uninteresting as well, as is par for the course for the High Republic. No one has really touched the exciting malignance of Elecia Zeveron and Marda Ro; the villains found in these pages certainly aren't able to. The action setpieces are pretty cool, but again fail to live up to the heights seen in The Acolyte. As a part of the High Republic initiative, it's okay but premature-maybe revisit it once Trials of the Jedi comes out. If you're looking for more of what The Acolyte provided, look elsewhere. Also the cover sucks.

Look it’s a decent Star Wars novel and we get to see a bit of what happened after to some High Republic characters. Worth a read if you’re into it, not mind blowing.
