This was really great at the start: an ex addict finds a summer job as a baby sitter to a little boy teddy. teddy has some quirks and doesn’t like to be in anything but 1 shirt and he draws odd pictures. Eventually this gets witchy, teddy ends up being a little girl who has been abducted and while it was surprising, it was totally unrealistic.
This book completely shocked me! I knew it was going to be a spooky book with lots of twists and turns, but this book was just something else.
I’m not usually one to get too spooked out by books, like I have survived a few of Stephen King’s novels, so I didn’t think I would be too phased by this one. But I was! There was something about the tone of the novel and smalls hints of supernatural things that gave me the creeps. I literally had shivers and didn’t want to read it at night because I was spooked.
Straight away I was hooked on the story. The way the author writes this is incredible, revealing tiny bits of info at a time so you think you know what’s going to happen, but then the story does a complete backflip and you don’t know anything! You became connected to the character with this writing, and just the whole layout and pacing of the story was really well executed. Like there wasn’t any moment where I was bored or didn’t want to read it. The slow suspense and tension really built up and it kept me very entertained. The twists and turns were placed so well, and I actually really enjoyed. Sometimes in thrillers, the big plot twist doesn’t feel real at all, but in this it felt super realistic and really rational thinking on most of the characters parts.
Now, the drawings. These were amazing! Not only did they contribute to greatly to the story, by laying little hints out for the reader if they looked close enough, but it also broke up the long passages of text. It was a nice reprieve from the text and I really enjoyed their inclusion. The story would not be the same without the pictures. The hints within them were really subtle, and I didn’t pick up anything from them, so when the huge plot twist came I was really shocked. I kept trying to guess based off the pictures, but I was no where close to what actually happened. Anyway, the drawings are fab and the evolution from child-like to more adult-like really built the suspense and tension up and increased the spooky vibes.
Overall, this book is my new favourite thriller, with such a unique and intriguing plot that will draw you right in!

This isn't a very generous 2 star, some parts were intriguing, like the drawings throughout and I think the bones of the story had a lot to offer but something just fell flat for me. Some parts felt superfluous while others felt like they needed to be fleshed out a little bit more. None of the characters were particularly likable, and the end was just sort of a melancholy blah thrown together. I wouldn't go as far as to say this was BAD but there are probably better thrillers out there with similar concepts.
was not expecting the ending of this book. took me by a big surprise in the best way. such a good read
