As with so many stories better known through cultural osmosis than for the original, this was delightfully stranger than expected: Tom Bombadil, entwives, and ALL the goddamn singing. A relief as well to find that, despite the infamous depth of lore, in LOTR at least it isn’t rammed down your throat. No modern fantasy magic system here.
Even so, the pacing problem is real. The Two Towers is painfully uneventful by comparison to its peers, and the full half of Return of the King following the destruction of the Ring is a crying slog. Still, the sheer humanity of the story makes it a major step up from so many of its descendants.
