This book completely surprised me. The movie preview did not interest me and when a friend loaned me this book and told me to read it, I was still skeptical. But, once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down; I was totally enthralled. I found Michael & Hanna's relationship a bit much to stomach in part 1, but I couldn't get enough of part 2, with its moral questions about collective responsibility during World War II. Schlink did a phenomenal job crafting these characters and weaving an intricate story of infatuation, love, and morality.

I was disappointed with this book. The early scenes when the young Michael was with Hanna were good; afterward the story just had too much telling, not enough showing. In the end the book just felt like a public service announcement against illiteracy. If you don't learn to read, this is what will happen to you!!
the ending really saved this book for me. the beginning was interesting but rather creepy and the middle was rather meh. but the last 30 or so pages did it for me. i nearly cried!
