This edition is gorgeous and the interactive elements add a touch of fun to the reading experience. In fact, the design alone gives this book an extra star. However, because this was written in the 1700's the writing is quite difficult to get through. The sentences are often long-winded and unnecessarily full of side thoughts. Not to mention the pacing is very strange and there's no build up of the relationship between Beauty and the Beast. This being a fairy tale from so long ago I can't really fault it for that, but I definitely didn't enjoy that aspect. If anything, the Disney version is better solely because it had interaction between the two main characters that could lead us to actually believe they loved each other.

I definitely prefer the Disney version, but this story was still charming! And I would HIGHLY recommend this copy because of the beautiful illustrations and the interactive pieces to it. My only complaint was that at times it got a little confusing, specifically the ending with Beauty’s backstory. However, it was still really good!

I knew the original story and the Disney version weren’t the same, but like it had some similarities. But the original is just so different from the Disney version, like I can’t even comprehend it. I like the Disney version a lot better than the original, they all seem a little shallow. But that’s just my opinion.

Notwithstanding that this story used ‘notwithstanding’ one too many times for my liking, the physical book is beautiful.

Glad I got to read the original and appreciate it for what it is, but I enjoy the Disney version better. The beginning was great, middle dragged, ending was convoluted.

I liked the inclusion of the Prince’s backstory, which actually makes more sense than the Disney version, but hated how it was written. Didn’t enjoy how the Prince and Beauty were “meant to be” and basically forced by the Fairies to be together because both of them are just morally perfect, virtuous, pure, and not vain at all. I guess for the time it was written, it fits; this story also influenced many other wonderful stories and that’s why it gets 4 stars.

I'll always devour a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but I must admit, I do prefer the Disney classic over this one. This was an enjoyable read, nevertheless!
