I really struggled with this book which is a shame because Beauty and the Beast has always been my favourite Disney movie and I wanted so badly to enjoy the original fairytale. Unfortunately a combination or long, drawn-out descriptions, out-dated dialogue and tediously long inner-monologues in place of any real action or story progression put an end to my wish. I found myself unable to engage in the characters or the story and quite often reading 10 pages before realising that I hadn't taken in a single thing and struggling to remember what had happened when I started reading. My love of the Disney versions had me persevere to the end of this tale but, even now, I don't feel like I read the entire book because I zoned out for so much of it and stopped paying attention.
This book gets 2 stars simply because it is a beautiful book with gorgeous illustrations so I didn't feel like I could give it just 1 star. However for now this book will remain firmly on my shelf for a few years until I feel ready to try again. I hope that, given time, knowing what to expect and being more prepared will mean I enjoy this book more.

Wonderfully illistrated version of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Truly lovely edition.
This book would be more of a 3.5 than just a 3. Yes, whilst the Disney animated classic is better this is still a solid story. I think there were interactive elements in the story helped me want to finish the book instead of putting it down. I believe if you are a person who is just someone who doesn't care if there is a lot of action in a book then this is a good choice.
Absolutely beautiful book - the illustrations are amazing and so perfect. The overall formatting, font, layout - this book is a work of art and a joy to read.
I was fascinated to read the actual original version of B&B, which is a lot more convoluted and involved than our standard version these days - Beauty has eleven siblings (!!!) and there was this really lengthy bit about these fairies who didn't get along and whatnot. It was all a good story, but I can see how the whole story has evolved over the years.

“I would rather perish at once than be dying every day of fright, sorrow, disgust, and weariness.”
So not a lot actually happens in this book. The explanation of everything at the end is BONKERS though. Like, what?
really pretty book but wow those last few chapters were almost entirely unnecessary
I started this book thinking that I'd just read it to know what the original was really about, but I ended up liking it far more than I thought I would. The first part of the story is pretty standard and charming but the second half is basically everything most people don't know about. It was a bit annoying that the end was largely exposition from the "fairy godmother" but once you get past that, it's actually pretty interesting. The moral of the story is completely different from what most assume but that just makes the read more interesting. Overall, I'd recommend this book to both adults and children.
