This story of The Beauty and the Beast was originally written in French (La belle et la bête) and published in 1740. I've only ever read modified versions as a child and I've of course seen the movies, including the new version released this year.
This 2017 edition contains the text translated into English in 1858 by J.R. Planché. It contains beautiful illustrations and interactive elements by MinaLima Design and is a must!
I started reading it several months ago with my 12 year old daughter but it was a daunting task because of the old English. I had to stop and explain the story to her after every few paragraphs. We got through 2/3 of it and then she kept putting off getting back to it. I decided I would finish it on my own but I'll relate the rest of the story to her while she looks at the illustrations and interactive elements.
I was suprised at how very different this early version is from the ones I read as a child and from the Disney movies. The last 1/3 of the book was the most interesting to me, full of twists and suprises. There are a few different queens and fairies in the story and because of the language used I had to backtrack a few times to make sure I understood what was going on. Well worth the read however!
I look forward to reading the MinaLima Studios version of Peter Pan and The Jungle Book (which I own) and The Little Mermaid and Other Fairy Tales (coming out in March 2018).

Four stars here mostly for the pretty illustrated edition of this book. The story was...interesting to read the original, but ultimately not that great. My only complaint for the illustrations is that would have been cool to see a reimagining of the beast based on the text from this book. We don’t get a lot of description, but we at least know it’s supposed to be a stocky, scaled creature. Instead the illustrations are pretty Disney-esque.
For the story portion...the whole story between beauty and the beast actually takes place in the first half of the book and then we get to spend the next hundred pages going through it again from the beasts point of view, followed by a few more chapters of faerie backstory.

Padahal ketiganya yg bikin istana Beast jadi bearable.
Sudah lah. Nonton versi Disney aja. Cartoon or Emma Watson, dua2nya kereeeeen. Nerd Belle is my kind of Belle.

Despite The Beauty and the Beast being one of my favourite Disney Movies I didn’t find myself falling in love with the actual fairy tale. But I knew that before diving into this beautiful illustrated version of the tale.
The tale itself? 3 stars. The book and its design? 5++++ stars. I really adore the Minalima duo and if I could, I would buy everything ever designed by them.
If you look for a beautiful edition for a classic fairy tale, go for this one.

3 stars. I love Beauty and the Beast and almost all adaptations of the story (except for the Disney live action…no ma’am) so I’m glad that I’ve finally picked this up. It is definitely a very romantic story and it is well written. The illustrations are beautiful but it isn’t the most interesting read. It’s really wordy and just a bit dull and I felt like I was making no progress the more I read but I do just really love this story so much and for that I can’t give it less than 3 stars.

A joy to read, but a lot more complicated than I expected. It was a bit unbelievably settled in the end, which isn't strange for a fairy tale, but it did lower my opinion of it. Overall, I enjoyed it, but would not count it among my favourites (even though Disney has made me a Beauty and the Beast fan).
I *finally* read this timeless tale, and I appreciated seeing where all the retellings of it originated. And this version of it made the experience even better! I LOVE illustrated books.
