The book is beautiful but I didn’t realize the story would be in ye’ ole English.
Sigh, but the drawings are just BEAUTIFUL

An enchanting and wonderfully illustrated edition that brings the fairytale even more to life.
The original version is quite different to what we know from pop culture and the Disney movies, but still the same at its core. It is all about seeing with your soul and not paying too much attention to what the eye can see. I adore the story, even though of course it doesn't hold up with our modern views and the ways that girls and people not belonging to nobility are treated are dreadful, even in a fairytale, which could make anything impossible possible.

This is the first Mina Lima edition of a book I have read. I also own The Secret Garden. I would have liked more interactive stuff but maybe there isn't much to do with Beauty and the Beast. I don't know. I'll have to read The Secret Garden and see how many interactive items there are in that one to compare. The illustrations were pretty. Now to the story. Okay this is not Disney's version at all. First of all there are lots of fairies, evil and good, that cause all of the story to happen. We don't find out till the very end though. Also, the Beast is nice. Belle was a Princess and was kidnapped and then switched with a dead baby to be raised by a good man with 5 older children. The fairies already set into motion her going to the Monster's house later in life. For the monster's spell to be broken Belle has to agree to marry him. Oh did I mention the Beast is her cousin. Hmm. This was written in the 1700s so I guess it was normal but still. Glad I read it but a really strange tale.
i really want to watch beauty and the beast now
(also the original story is definitely so different, but still very fun and charming and i highly recommend this edition as the illustrations are stunning)

***SPOILERS*** This book was so far from what I expected going into it, but I loved it?? Beauty and the Beast is my favourite Disney movie, so I had always meant to read the story that inspired it, but hadn't until now. The first half was somewhat slow getting into, a bit confusing at parts, but those all get explained later. It's the half way point where it really picks up and there is just twist after twist. I breezed through it at the end. I loved the Fairy world, reading about the Beast's backstory really fleshed him out too and had me feeling really bad for him?? and the story given to Beauty is one that just shocked me at every turn. The only thing I'd say was a negative was that towards the end the chapters are mostly dialogue for 20 pages each chapter. It's a lot of explaining and telling, it feels more as if the author is just rambling to the reader about the plot and cool backstory than it being fleshed out. Beauty didn't really have much chance to react to being told her own story which gave a bit of a disconnect. ALSO THEY WERE COUSINS.
