I love this author and her style of mysteries. Always a pleasure to read.

It started out interesting and got worse from there. I also didn’t enjoy the narrator.

This book was on my to-read list, it was available in an electronic version from my library, and I was able to read it on a three-hour night time drive (obviously I was not the driver!). The two-stars sums this up - it was OK. I don't know what I expected - either more of a ghost story or more of a mystery? In the end, I wasn't enthralled with the supernatural part of the story, and the whodunit part was not entirely surprising. I do think the author did a good job with her portrayal of kids and how mean they can be to each other. I was a pretty good kid, but still felt like sending "I'm sorry" notes to a couple people who I did not stand up for even though I knew they were being picked on.

I've been feeling a little bit sick for the past couple of days, so I've been sticking to lighter reading. This mystery revolves around two identical murders that took place thirty years apart--when the first victim's friend Kate returns to town to care for her sick mother and the second little girl is murdered, everyone is terrified and suspicious. As Kate attempts to unravel the truth, she must come to term with her own role in her friend's death, which has inspired a slew of local legends and ghost stories. Anyway, I liked the mystery part (though it was pretty easy to guess the killer) and had some mixed feelings about the ghost story parts, so I'll give it a B.

compelling mix of murder mystery and ghost story w/ some effective magical realism worked in. i could see this as a really effecting indie movie.

Not into ghost stories but this one captured me from the very beginning to the very end. Really enjoyed it.

I love this author. This is the third book I have read by her and she never has disappointed me. Her stories are always a little creepy and dark; just how I like them.
dark mysterious sad medium-paced

Started this in the morning and, in spite of doing laundry, making meals and other joylessly mundane household chores, I managed to finish it after dinner. Again, McMahon pulls you into the story and compels you to plant your bottom in a chair for hours. Creepy from start to finish.
